Creighton Pfau again showed this week why he's one of the best quarterbacks in all of the North Star Athletic Association. The West Fargo junior was 17-of-31 passing for 286 yards, and four touchdowns, in Mayville State's 34-15 win in the North Star Athletic Association opener for both teams. The win marked Mayville State's first conference win since October 15, 2016, a 35-28 win for the Comets over the Waldorf Warriors.
"The guys are buying into what it takes to dig a new foundation for Comet football," head coach
Jeff Larson said. "As a staff, we are excited that their commitment paid off tonight."
Mayville State went to work, offensively, early in the first quarter. With 13:05 to go in the first quarter, Presentation ended their first offensive drive of the game with a punt, which put Mayville State on their own 38 yard line. Just five plays, 62 yards and under two-and-a-half minutes later, a 16-yard pass from Pfau to
Austin Urlaub. The Comets led 7-0 with just under 11 minutes left in the opening quarter.
"We came into the game tonight knowing that we had to fight for as long as it takes to start the conference season with a win," Larson said. "I am proud of the way we came out and did what we had to do to be successful."
Mayville State made it 14-0 with 5:18 to go in the first quarter, when Pfau found Josh Portillo for a seven-yare pass, capping off a eight play, 70-yard drive.
Presentation pulled to within eight points, when Melvin Covin scampered in front four yards out, on a drive that took up 12 plays and 66 yards, in just over four minutes.
The Comets then extended the lead, on a 21-yard pass from Pfau to freshman
Reese Hanson, for a 20-6 Comets lead, early in the second quarter.
Presentation cut into that lead, just five minutes before halftime, on a 26-yard pass from their quarterback to Dylan Paulsen, making it an eight-point game at halftime.
Presentation then pulled to within five midway through the third quarter, when Luiz Ferreira nailed a 29-yard field goal, on a drive that spanned 12 plays and 48 yards, chewing up 7:23 worth of clock.
"Presentation put up a heck of a fight," Larson said. "We are excited to be coming home with the W."
Mayville State put the final score in with 5:35 left, when Pfau aired the ball out, finding Portillo deep, for an 82-yard passing touchdown, on a two-play, 83-yard drive, which lasted 49 seconds.
Pfau also led in the running game, finishing with 11 rushes for 64 yards, followed by
Keon Suber, who had 15 rushes for 55 yards. Â
Portillo had six receptions for 168 yards and two touchdowns, leading the receiving corps for the Comets.
Mayville State is now 2-2, and 1-0 in the NSAA. They will take on Dickinson State at home next Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
"We got the rest of the night to enjoy this win," Larson said. "Then we have to put all of our effort into getting ready for a great Dickinson team."
