Aberdeen, S.D. – The Mayville State University softball team dropped two games on Saturday to College of Saint Mary's and Dakota Wesleyan by a final score of 6-8 and 5-10 respectively. The Comets drop to 0-4 on the regular season.
Game One:
After the Comets threatened in the first inning, College of Saint Mary's scored a run in the bottom of the frame to take a 1-0 lead. The Comets would score one run in the top of the third inning on two Flame errors. Larkin scored the run in the third inning on a wild throw from the flames to tie the game at one. CSM answered the Comets with two runs in the bottom of the third inning on three hits.
Mayville State would tie the game back at three in the top of the fourth inning on two hits and one Flame error. During the inning, Gutierrez was up to bat with the bases loaded and one out when Gutierrez doubled over the center fielder that scored Iverson and Boechler. Stegmen was thrown out at the plate during the Gutierrez double to take the lead.
College of Saint Mary's would score three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on three hits and they left two runners on base. The Comets would score one run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the lead to two. MSU scored on an Ontiveros double to right field that scored Kemball. In the bottom of the fifth inning, CSM scored one run on one hit and two errors. The Flames would add another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the lead to 8-4. In the final inning, Ontiveros recorded her second home run of the weekend to cut the lead in half, but it was not enough as the Flames defeated the Comets 8-6.
Three Comets finished the game with two hits, Gutierrez, Ontiveros, and Roeges. Gutierrez also finished with two runs batted in and one walk. Ontiveros finished with three runs batted in and one run scored with her two hits. Shaye Kemball pitched all six innings, allowing 11 hits, six earned runs, five walks, and two strikeouts.
Game Two:
For the second time today, the opponents scored in the first inning against the Comets, as the Tigers scored two runs on two hits in the first inning. Mayville State answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning as Gutierrez scored on a Kemball double to left and a sacrifice fly from Foster that scored Kemball.
Dakota Wesleyan scored five runs in the third inning on three hits and one Comet error to give them a 7-2 lead. In the bottom of the frame, Mayville State answered with one run on three hits. Roeges doubled to right-center field that scored Iverson from first base. The Comets continued to close the Tiger lead in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring one run on two hits. Foster knocked in her second run of the game on a double to left-center field that scored Ontiveros.
The Tigers scored one run in the sixth inning on two hits but left the bases loaded, as they extended the lead to 8-4. The Comets threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning, as they left the bases loaded as Ontiveros pulled a home run foul, she would strikeout later in the inning and end the MSU threat. The Tigers would add two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend the lead to 10-2.
Mayville State would score one run in the bottom of the seventh inning but would leave the bases loaded for the second straight inning and would lose the second game by a final score of 5-10. The Comets finished the game with five runs on 10 hits and two errors on defense. Nicole Fierro tallied two hits on four at-bats and drove in one run. Bailey Larkin also recorded two hits in the loss. Jocelyn Ontiveros recorded her second two-hit game of the day, with one run scored.
Kemball, Foster, Roeges, and Kalley Partyka each tallied one hit in the second game. Courtney Boll took the loss in the circle going 2.1 innings allowing four hits, seven earned runs, four walks, and one strikeout. Sidney Fairbanks threw 3.0 innings in relief, allowing five hits, one earned run, and three walks. Shaye Kemball recorded 1.2 innings, allowing two hits, two earned runs, and one walk in the loss.
