Comet Softball drops two games to Bruins on Saturday

Bellevue, Neb. – The Comet Softball team drops two conference games to the Bellevue Bruins by a final score of 4-10 and 5-8. The Comets drop to 2-12 on the regular season and 0-4 in NSAA play. 

Game One:

Mayville State started the scoring in the top of the first inning on two hits. Gutierrez led the game off with a walk, followed by a single by Larking to put runners at first and second with zero outs. After a fielder's choice that put runners at first and third with one out. The next batter Kemball singled in Gutierrez to start the scoring. The Bruins answered with two runs, two hits, and two Mayville State errors in the bottom of the first inning.

Mayville State got the lead back in the top of the second inning on three hits. Foster doubled to start the inning. With one out in the inning, Roeges singled to center to put runners on first and third with one out. Tingey singled in Foster from third base to tie the game at two. The next batter Stegman grounded into a fielder's choice to score Roeges to take the 3-2 lead.

The Bruins scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning on two hits to take a 5-3 lead. Bellevue University added five runs in the bottom of the fourth run to open the game to 10-4. Mayville State would score one run in the top of the fifth inning on two hits, and one Bruin error. After Larkin reached on an infield single followed by an error from the pitcher. Duval slapped a single up the middle to score the fourth run of the game as the Comets drop game one by a final of 4-10.

Ashlyn Tingey finished the game with three hits and drove in one of the four Comet runs. Bailey Larkin tallied two hits and scored one run. Nicole Fierro and Jocelyn Ontiveros each tallied one hit in the loss. Alissa Foster and Roeges each recorded one hit and one run scored. Mackenzie Duval and Shaye Kemball recorded one hit and one run batted in.

Game Two:

The Bruins would score first in game two scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning on one hit. Mayville State would score four in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead. A two-run home run from Foster gave the Comets a 2-1 lead. The next batter Ontiveros hit a solo home run to take a 3-1 lead. Later in the inning, Spurgeon laid down a squeeze bunt to score the fourth run of the inning.

Bellevue would answer with four runs combined in the bottom of the second and third inning to take a 5-4 lead. Mayville State would tie the game at five on a rbi double from Spurgeon to score Foster. The Comets were walked off in the bottom of the seventh inning on a three-run home run from the Bruins to drop game four by a final of 5-8.

Shaye Kemball and Alissa Foster each recorded two hits in the loss. Foster drove in two runs and also scored two runs. Laura Spurgeon tallied one hit, two runs batted in, and one walk. Brooke Roeges and Jocelyn Ontiveros each tallied one hit in the loss. Shaye Kemball started in the circle for the Comets allowing eight hits, five earned runs, three strikeouts over five innings. Courtney Boll tallied the loss going 1.2 innings allowing two hits, three earned runs, and two walks.
