Box Score MAYVILLE, ND – Dickinson State scored 37 points combined in the middle two quarters Saturday afternoon at Jerome Berg Field, en route to a 51-13 win over the Mayville State University Comets on Farmer's Bowl Saturday in North Star Athletic Association action. Saturday's loss was the fourth straight to start the Comets season, and second at home this season.
The Blue Hawks scored two touchdowns in the first 11:45 of the first quarter, before Mayville State struck to pull to within eight points. Tim Salmon connected with Javeion Davison for a 54-yard touchdown pass to put the Comets on the board with 2:19 to go in the first quarter. The extra point attempt failed, making it 14-6 Dickinson State.
It was all Dickinson State in the second quarter, as they racked up 23 points to take a 37-6 lead into the halftime break. An early third quarter touchdown by Dickinson State put the Blue Hawks ahead by a wide 44-6 margin.
Salmon cut the lead to 32 points on a second-and-goal touchdown pass to Davison from three yards out, and Xander Coleman put the extra point between the posts to make it 44-13. It was too little, too late, however, as the Comets gave up another touchdown with three minutes to go in the third quarter on a 26-yard rushing touchdown from Braden Zuroff. Jace Johnson's extra point put the final score on the board.
Salmon finished 11-for-19 passing for 196 yards and two touchdowns. He was sacked four times by the Blue Hawks defense. Maalik Flowers had a game-high 71 yards receiving on three receptions. Davison's two touchdowns were a part of a three-reception, 61-yard day.
Three Comets registered double-digit rushing games: Mason Ollman finished with 30 yards rushing on five attempts, Cole Dukart with 25 yards on seven rushes, and Jason Nelson had three rushes for 10 yards.
The Comets were led defensively by Travyen Brownlee and Will Flemmons with eight tackles each.
The Comets will regroup this week and focus on their next opponent, the Dakota State University Trojans. They'll look to defeat the Trojans on their homecoming and senior day next Saturday. The two teams will kick off at 4 p.m. at Dakota State's Trojan Field. Last year, the Trojans swept the Comets in their two meetings—with Dakota State winning 37-28 on November 19 in Mayville, and 26-7 at home on April 7.
