WBB rolls past No. 23 College of the Ozarks 88-52, improves to 11-2 on the season

Box Score Bellevue, Neb. - No. 18 Comets Women's Basketball faced the number 23 ranked College of the Ozarks Bobcats on day two of the Bellevue Classic Saturday afternoon.

Mayville State dominated from the three point line where they outscored the Bobcats 36-3 enroute to an 88-52 win, snapping Ozarks win streak of 6.

"I think our communication defensively really helped us on that end of the floor. We understood the game plan and executed it well," assistant coach Claire Blascziek said.

The Comets opened up their scoring with a triple from Erin Walcker one minute in, which gave them a lead of 3-2. Mayville State did not trail for the rest of the game.

The Comets used an 11-2 run midway through the first quarter to turn a slim 5-4 lead into a 16-6 advantage. The Bobcats climbed back to 16-10, but the Comets finished the quarter with five consecutive points to take a 21-10 lead after 10 minutes.

Mayville State steadily strengthened their lead throughout the second quarter, as three pointers by Walker, CJ Decker and Taylor Dean boosted the lead to 37-20 with three minutes left. The Comets drilled six straight free throws at the end of the half to take a 43-28 advantage.

Blascziek added, "We knew Ozarks was going to continue to play hard so we just had to stay disciplined. I thought we moved the ball well offensively and wanted to continue that in the second half."

The Comets connected on 7 of 15 shots from the three point line and held the Bobcats to 0 of 8 from deep. Mayville State also went 12 of 14 from the charity stripe to compliment their hot shooting.

There was no letup from the Comets in the second half, as they stifled any attempt of a Bobcats comeback. A Mayville State 10-3 streak bumped the lead to over 20 points at 61-38, and the Comets again finished the quarter strong with the last five points to lead 67-41 going into the final stanza.

Mayville State opened the fourth quarter with a 13-2 run, which got the lead to over 30 points at 80-43. That allowed the Comets to fully utilize their bench and win going away 88-52.

Mayville State finished with an overall shooting percentage of 46% and fully used the free throw line to their advantage, making 26 of 29 attempts. Finally, The Comets only turned the ball over seven times and forced 16 Bobcat turnovers.

"I believe that every single player whether they are on the floor or off the floor play a crucial role  our team wins. I thought the players that went in off the bench worked very hard and gave us solid minutes," said Blascziek. "The players that didn't play today did such a good job of communicating to the girls on the floor, helping their teammates out."

Jordan Zrust collected her fourth double-double of the season with 25 points and 11 rebounds and also dished out 4 assists. Walcker added 14 points and two blocks, Jes Mertens finished with 13 and Greta Hillukka reached double figures with 11. Kayla Rocholl racked up four steals.

The Top 25 victory gives the Comets an 11-2 record. Mayville State will open conference play in two weeks against the Viterbo V-Hawks at the Lewy Lee.

"I think our girls work so hard day in and day out and their hard work is going to continue to show when game day comes around," added Blascziek.
