Mayville, N.D. - Mayville State Baseball is ready to start their 2023 fall season this week as they host Valley City State Sunday, September 10th at 1:00pm. This will be the first home event this year for Comet Atheltics.
The Comets went 24-24 last season but were runners up in the 2023 NSAA Conference Championship in their last season under long time head coach Scott Berry. A very experienced assistant coach,
Billy Tomblin, took over as head coach at the conclusion of last season following Berry's retirement.
When asked about going into Sunday's games Tomblin said, "I feel we did a good job recruiting last year and have a good group of incoming players who I think have the ability to help us get to where we want to be. That being said, its always tough for these guys. They just got here two weeks ago and they are asked to showcase their abilities in a very short amount of time all while they are trying to learn a new coaching staff, a new system, a new school - its tough but I am excited with what I have seen from our new guys to this point."
With the new guys adjusting to the system the Comets also have a good group of returners this season. "We have a veteran group of guys. Guys who have had a lot of experience playing in this program both on the mound and the field," said Tomblin.
With only a few team practices under their belt, coach Tomblin has simple expectations for his team. "I just want to see the kids go out and compete," stated Tomblin, "I've been a part of teams who went 11-1 in the fall and went 0-10 the first 10 games in the spring. So there is not guarantee a great fall equals a great spring just like a bad fall will equal a bad spring."
Tomblin also added, "These 8 games will tell me a lot about the "non-baseball" characteristics that I truly believe we need to posses to be champions and it will give us a chance to work on the things we are lacking before we start rolling in the spring."
Though Tomblin has been with the program for well over a decade, things will look a little different in the dugout this year for him. "I don't know if it has hit me yet that Coach Berry won't be in the dugout with me but I'm excited for the opportunity to lead this team and cannot wait to get on the field come Sunday," said Tomblin.
Come show support for your Comets baseball team at Scott Berry field this Sunday at 1:00pm!
