Comets MBB picks up their 11th win of the season Monday afternoon

Bellevue, Neb. - The Mayville State University Men's Basketball team looked to bounce back Monday afternoon after their loss to No. 14 Morningside Sunday. The Comets took on Haskell Indian Nations University where they pulled away in the second half and took the game 99-76.

1st Half:
  • Comets win the tip & Stevan Garza gets the first bucket of the game
  • London Williams lays in a bucket to get the Comets up 6-1 in the first 2 minutes of the game
  • After the first 4 minutes of play, Comets lead 11-10
  • Haskell gets within 2, trailing the comets 20-18 after 8 minutes
  • Midway through the first half, Mayville State leads 29-22 & John White, Jr. leads the Comets with 13 points (3-3 behind the arc)
  • A 9-2 Haskell run would get the Fighting Indians within two; 37-35 Comets with 5:30 remaining
  • Comets go on a 7-0 run as White sinks a 3 to get him to 18 points in the first half, Comets lead 48-37 with 2 minutes remaining
  • Clock hits 30 seconds and Leomar Castillo gets his first bucket of the game, giving the Comets their biggest lead of the night of 11
  • Haskell nails a bucket at the buzzer, Mayville State leads 52-41 at the end of the half
  • White has 18 points in the first half; 4-6 from behind the arc
  • The Comets had the lead the entire game
2nd Half:
  • Haskell inbounds the ball and gets the first bucket of the second half
  • Comets score just 4 points in the first five minutes, Haskell scores 10 to get within 5
  • White puts Mayville State back up by 11 after he drives to the hoop reaching 20 points on the night
  • Williams gets to 20 points in the night, Comets lead 66-56 with 12 minutes remaining
  • Griffin lays it in to give the Comets their largest lead of the night with 16; 75-59 with 9:40 remaining
  • Comets go on a 13-3 run in the last 3 minutes to lead 77-59
  • Michaelson gets to 12 points and extends their lead 85-68 with 6 minutes left
  • Garza drains back-to-back free throws as the Comets go 18-18 from the line extending their lead to 19
  • Noah Brown gets in the game scoring a quick jump shot followed up by a 3 pointer to give the Comets a 23-point lead with 20 seconds to go
  • Mayville State shuts down Haskell 99-76 and gets their 11th win of the season
"I think we got out in transition a lot better today and got some easy baskets," said head coach Brandon McGruder. "It also helps when you go 18/18 from the free throw line and are able to make some perimeter shots."

- London Williams - 20 points (season high), 10 rebounds, 4 steals (career & season high), 10-10 from the line (career & season high)
- Nick Michaelson - 12 points, 5 rebounds, 6-8 from the field

The Comets improve to 11-4 on the season and will return back to the Lewy Lee this weekend, taking on Dickinson State (6-7) at 7:30pm Friday and the University of Jamestown (5-7) at 5:00pm on Saturday.

"We'll have to be focused and have two great practices to prep for this weekend," added McGruder. "We have the rop two teams from the preseason poll coming into the Lewy Lee so we'll have to be attentive to detail."
