Box Score 2 Sioux City, Iowa – Comet Baseball wrapped up their preseason play against Morningside University Tuesday afternoon in Sioux City.
Game 1: L 10-7
The Comets and the Mustangs would have a ping pong match of a first game.
Mayville State would score first as
Chris Shopbell hit a solo home run over left field with two outs.
The Mustangs would be able to respond in the bottom of the first and take advantage of a walk and a couple of wild pitches.
With two outs in the third, Mayville State would be able to plate 3 runs off 3 hits as Shopbell started if off with a doubled to left center scoring
Marcus Hughes.
Chris Lundmark then singled to right plating Shopbell to extend the lead 4-1.
Bottom of the fourth, the Mustangs would be able to get 2 runs off 2 hits and tack on 2 more in the bottom of the 5
th taking the lead 4-5.
In the top of the 6
th,
Zachary Evanochko would hit a 2 run homer over right field to take the lead 6-5.
But the Mustangs would once again respond, this time scoring 5 runs in the 6
th inning making the score Morningside 10, Mayville State 5.
The Comets would eventually load up the bases in the top of the 7
th but were only able to plate one run, the Mustangs would win 7-10.
Mark Turnquist got the start on the mound only pitching 1 inning, giving up 1 run and 2 walks.

Connor Cory would all get moments on the mound.
"We really need to start being more aggressive on the mound if we want things to turn around. Everything starts and ends there," said head coach
Billy Tomblin.
Morningside's Josh Pratt starting on the mound and pitched 5 full innings giving up 4 hits on 4 runs and 1 HR. The Mustangs would utilize only two more pitchers out of the bullpen to close out the game.
Mayville State scored 7 runs on 6 hits and had 4 errors.
"Defensively we are not helping our pitching staff either, we continue to make mistakes that are extending innings, putting mores tress on the pitchers and allowing other teams to have more opportunities to put runs on the board," added Tomblin.
Marcus Hughes went 2-4 with 1 RBI, 1 run
Chris Shopbell went 2-4 with 2 RBI, 2 runs, 2B, HR
Carson Lundmark went 2-2 with 2 RBI, 1 run
Zachary Evanochko went 1-3 with 2 RBI, 1 run, HR
Game 2: L 14-4
A wild pitch and an error by Morningside would allow the Comets to score 2 runs in the top of the first.
This would be the only 2 runs by the Comets until the 5
th inning where
Michael Feralio hit a SAC fly to score
Anthony Villanueva and then shortly after that
Caleb Jamieson singled to right field scoring Shopbell.
The Mustangs would score in every inning except the 4
th inning, allowing them to scatter 14 runs in the game.
Zachary Evanchko would get the game 2 start on the mound but it would be short lived and the Comets would utilize 5 different pitchers in a 6 inning span.
The Comets pitching staff gave up 14 runs on 15 hits, 9 of them earned.
The Mustangs would need to utilize 4 different pitchers to keep the Comets off balanced, only giving up 4 runs on 8 hits. The Morningside pitching staff would walk 3 and strike out 11.

The Comets record now stands at 5-16 and will start up conference play this weekend with a 4 game series at Dakota State.
