Parkville, Mo – Mayville State Comets Baseball headed south to take on Waldorf Thursday, which was originally slated to be a home game.
The bats came alive and the Comets took both games.
"Offensively we were better, but we are still not swinging it like we are capable of. We left a lot of runners on base, which if we want to make a serious run in conference play, we need to capitalize on these opportunities," said head coach
Billy Tomblin.
Game 1 – W 3-1
Austin McClure would get the start on the mound for Mayville State where he would keep the Warrior offense to just 1 run on 4 hits, he also struck out 4. McClure pitched the full game.
The Comets would be the first to score as
Marcus Hughes led the bottom of the first off with a single to right center. He then stole and advanced to third on the throw.
Anthony Villanueva would draw a walk and advanced to second after
Chris Shopbell grounded out to short, scoring Hughes.
Zachary Evanochko would hit a two out double, scoring Villanueva. Comets up 2-0.
It would be a rather fast paced and quiet game for both bats as the only other run for Mayville would come in the bottom of the 3
rd after Shopbell singled and
Carson Lundmark drove him in with a two out double.
In the top of the seventh the Warriors would hit a 2 out home run but that would be the only run Waldorf would get.
The Comets would score 3 runs off of 6 hits. Hughes, Villanueva, Shopbell, Lundmark, Evanochko and
Riley Rankin would all tally one hit in the game.
"We had a great start from Austin in game one that really set the tone for the day," said Tomblin.
Game 2 – W – 14-3
The bats would come alive for the Comets has they scored 14 runs off of 14 hits, scoring in 6 of the 8 innings played.
It would start in the bottom of the first by Hughes leading off with a single and Villanueva reaching first on an error by the Warriors.
Shopbell came up and blasted a triple scoring both Hughes and Villanueva. Lundmark was able to come up and poke one to right scoring Shopbell. Comets led 3-0.
The Warriors would plate one but Mayville State would tack on another run in the bottom of the second when Hughes hit a sacrifice fly to score Hilgersom who lead the inning off with a single.
Things would be quiet until the top of the 5
th where the Warriors tried to eat away at the lead scoring 2. The score was 3-4 heading into the bottom of the 5
th.
The Comets immediately responded by loading the bases.
Ricky Marquez was hit by pitch scoring a run and Hughes came up and hit a bases loaded single adding another run to the board.
Heading into the top of the 6
th - Comets 6, Warriors 3.
Waldorf would remain scoreless but the Comets would be able to score a total of 8 more runs spread out in the 6
th, 7
th and 8th innings.
Lundmark was able to walk it off with a 3 run home run in the bottom of the 8
th making the score 14-3.

Sam Hilgersom went 2-4
Teigen Parenteau went 1-3 with 1 run, 2 BBs, 2 SBs
Dereke Palmier would start on the mound for the Comets, giving up just 3 runs on 6 hits in 7 innings. He also struck out 6!
"Derek didn't have his best day on the mound but what he did do today was that he just kept going. It wasn't pretty, he didn't have his best "stuff" but he battled through it and put us in a position to win a game," added Tomblin.
Mayville State will be back in action tomorrow against the Warriors for game three and four of the series. First pitch is slated for 12:00pm.
