Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Sioux City, Iowa – Comets Baseball headed to Sioux City, Iowa to play a non-conference double header against the Briar Cliff Chargers Tuesday afternoon.
Both teams would play perfect defense on the day, committing zero errors.
Mayville State, however, would struggle to hold a lead late in both games and fall to the Chargers.
"It's the same song and dance as it's been all season; we are not getting it done on the mound. It might sound harsh but the reality is that's where the game of baseball starts and finishes," said a frustrated head coach
Billy Tomblin. "I am not saying anything here that has not been said to the guys – we refuse to take the next step. We have the talent we need to be successful on the mound and I personally think we match up as good, if not better, than most. But we just cannot get the job done and at the end of the day, that's what matters."
Game L – 5-6
Being a mid-week game, Mayville State would utilize the bullpen giving 6 pitchers opportunities to get time on the mound.
The Comets would be in charge most of the game getting on the board first in the 1
st and 2
nd inning and holding the Chargers to just 1 run heading into the bottom of the 6
th.
Six different Comets would rack up hits in game 1, 8 overall.
Marcus Hughes went 1-3, SB, HBP
Anthony Villanueva went 2-4, 1 RBI
Riley Rankin went 1-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HR
Chris Shopbell went 2-2, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 2B, SB
"Offensively we are still a little inconsistent, but things are trending in a positive direction. It seems like everyday we are getting contributions from just about everybody in the line up in one way or another which is going to be very important come tournament time," added Tomblin.
Game L – 7-5
The Comets would again pull from the bullpen to give another 6 different pitchers chances to face batters on the non-conference match up.
Mayville State would be in control of the Chargers until the bottom of the 7
th where they would give up 5 runs and the Chargers would be able to walk it off for the win.
Marcus Hughes went 2-4, 2 RBI, 3B
Carson Lundmark went 2-4, 3 RBI, 3B
