Baseball drops game to Jamestown 3-6 Wednesday

Box Score Jamestown, N.D. - Mayville State Comets Baseball headed to Jamestown Wednesday for a single nine inning game against the Jimmies.

Despite meeting three times prior this fall, the Comets wouldn't be able to get past the Jimmies.

"Tough loss today. Collectively we were out of sync at the plate. We were missing pitches we should drive and the times we did drive it, we hit it right at somebody. We didn't execute the short game which led us to missing opportunities to score runs," said head coach Billy Tomblin.

The Jimmies would score first and then again in the third to take an early 3-0 lead.

Neither team would score again until the top of the 7th when the Comets offense finally got going.

With one out, Riley Rankin doubled to right and Avery Kirkup would come in and pinch run.  Quinn Pershing then singled to right field scoring Kirkup, cutting the Comets deficit and making the score 3-1 Jimmies.

The Jimmies responded by tacking on three more runs in the bottom of the 8th to extend their lead 6-1.

Carson Lundmark led the top of the 9th off with a solo home run to right field followed up by a Rankin home run to the same spot making the score 6-3 Jimmies.

That is all the Comets could put together and would fall to Jamestown.

Riley Rankin - 3-4, 1 RBI, 2 2B, 1 HR
Quinn Pershing - 2-3, 1 RBI
Carson Lundmark - 1-4, 1 HR

"Our defense was probably the most frustrating part of the game because we kicked the balls that are routine and plays we need to make if we are serious about being a competitive team," added Tomblin.

Garret Lundmark would get the start on the mound for the Comets. He gave up 1 run on 3 hits and struck out 3 in 2 full innings of work.

Jack Patten came in for Lundmark, getting the biggest chunk of the innings, going 4.1 innings. Patten gave up 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 3 and struck out 3.

"Pitching wise we misplayed two bunts and walked a few guys which led to their three runs," said Tomblin. "We need to be able to field our position on the mound. Pitching is only part of the responsibilities of a pitcher."

Tomblin ended with, "My message to the guys after the game was 'you get out what you put in' - we didn't put in enough to be able to win this one."

The Comets will wrap up their fall season next Wednesday as they head to Dickinson State for two, seven inning games against the Blue Hawks.
