Sioux Center, Iowa - Mayville State Comets Softball kicked off their 2025 season at the American State Bank Dome in Sioux Center, Iowa Friday and Saturday.
The Comets played four games in the tournament hosted by Dordt University. Despite strong showings from sophomore pitchers,
Lacey Mathiowetz &
Autumn McGough, the Comets would go 0-4 on the weekend.
"Overall, I was impressed with our day one performance on the mound and defensively. Today, you could tell we lacked competitiveness and we were tired," said head coach
Jordan Olson. "We really need to get to work this week to have a more competitive mindset with 2 strikes and overall not let teams distract us from being the team I know we can be."
Friday Recap:
Game one on Friday was against York University out of Nebraska. The Comets got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and held it until the sixth when York was able to plate 3 runs.
The Comets wouldn't be able to get anyone else across the plate, and would fall to York 0-3.
Lacey Mathiowetz got the start in the circle and would have a career high 10 strike outs. She game up 4 hits and 3 runs in her full 7 innings of work.
Transfer,
Antarez Sierra, went 2-4 for the Comets and
Madison Terres went 2-3, driving in both runs in the game.
Mayville State had no time to waste as they were faced with the Dordt Defenders immediately following the York game.
It was a pitchers duel early, as niether team scored until the 4th. The Comets led 1-0 until the bottom of the 5th when Dordt was able to plate 3 runs.
Mayville State responded with another run in the 6, but Dordt would tack on 3 more in the bottom of the 6th and the Comets would fall 6-2.
Autumn McGough started in the circle for the Comets. She pitched a full 6 innings, striking out 9 and scattering 6 hits.
Ryanne Bass was 2-3 from the plate with 1 RBI and
Madison Terres plated the other run.
Saturday Recap:
Both Saturday's games would be against GPAC opponents, the Concordia Bull Dogs & the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers.
Despite another strong showing from Mathiowetz in game one, the Bull Dogs were able to score 3 in the 3rd and 2 more in the 6th to get the 5-0 win over the Comets.
Mayville State had juts 2 hits in the game, one from McGough and the other from center fielder,
Kate Vigen.
The Comets looked to find anything to close the weekend out on a high note, however, Dakota Wesleyan would come out hot in the first inning and put up 6 runs quickly.
The Tigers scored in every inning except the fourth as the Comets struggled to settled down defensively and in the circle. They gave up 10 hits and committed 4 errors and fell 13-3.
"It is a long season; no one wants to open up 0-4, but we have 50 games on our schedule, so this is just a small part of the next 3 months," added Olson. "We are going to go back to work this week and hopefully find ways to challenge ourselves more mentally to put us in a better position next weekend in Jamestown."
Mayville State will be back in action next weekend in the Nelson Family Bubble in Jamestown playing four games between Saturday & Sunday.
First pitch is slated for 12pm on Saturday against Dickinson State and followed by a 4:30pm game against the University of Mary.
