Game Recap: Softball | | Jordan Olson, SID

Comet Softball goes 2-2 at the Friends Invitational

Wichita, Kansas - The Mayville State University Comets Softball team headed south to Wichita, Kansas this weekend to play in the Friends University Invitational. This would be the first time the Comets had played outside and on dirt this season.

The Comets would be able to pull off a late come back against York Saturday afternoon after Autumn McGough hit a grand slam over the right field fence late in the game.

Sunday, Mackenzie Fuxa got her first start of her career and hit a solo home run in the 6th to tie it up 3-3 against Hastings. Fuxa would later find herself with bases loaded, full count and 2 outs in the bottom of the seventh. She hit a line drive double down the left field line scoring the winning run and boosting the Comets to going 2-2 weekend.

"With the adversity that we have been going through, it is nice to see us get 2 competitive wins over the weekend, especially against two teams we previously lost to earlier this year," said head coach Jordan Olson. "I am proud of the bounce back both Saturday & Sunday, our team continues to show resiliency with whatever comes their way."

Game 1: L 10-2 vs. Sterling College

- Comets get on the board first
- Sterling responds with 4 runs on 4 hits in the bottom of the 1st inning
- Sterling scores 2 more in the second and another in the 3rd while the Comets' bats are quiet
- Nevaeh Stinson leads the 4th off with a walk and is eventually hit in by Lacey Mathiowetz
- Sterling scores 3 more runs in the bottom of the 5th, taking the game

Game 2: W 5-3 vs. York University

- York scores first with 2 runs in the top of the first inning
- Both teams bats are quiet has it remains 2-0 through the next 3 innings
- York scores another run in the top of the 5th to extend their lead 3-0
- Comets plate 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th, all on 2 outs
- Autumn McGough hits her first collegiate home run, a grand slam over right field to give the Comets a 5-3 lead
- Baileigh Momberg pitched a full 7 innings, giving up just 3 runs on 7 hits, she also struck out 7 giving her her first collegiate win in the circle

Game 3: L 12-3 vs. Bethany College

- Lindsey Tulla gives the Comets an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after she hits a double to centerfield, scoring Antarez Sierra

- Mayville State chips away, tying it up after Mackenzie Fuxa his her first collegiate home run
- Momberg goes 3 up 3 down with Hastings in the top of the 7th to keep things tied 3-3
- McGough singles to centerfield with 2 outs
- Ryanne Bass & Nevaeh Stinson get back to back walks to load up the bases with 2 outs and the winning run at 3rd
- Fuxa, in her first start of the season, with bases loaded, a full count and two outs, smokes a line drive down the left field line for the walk off win
- Momberg gets her second collegiate win of the season in the circle, pitching a full 7 innings, giving up 6 hits and striking out 7

"Overall, freshman Baileigh Momberg has done a phenomenal job being put in a position she probably didn't think she'd be in. Two starts and two wins when we really needed her to step up is great to see for her future. Everytime she is on the mound, she just continues to get better," added Olson. "The home run to tie it up and the walk off to win the game couldn't have come from a more deserving player tonight. Mackenzie Fuxa has just put her head down and gone to work, and she really stepped up when we needed her. Our future is bright, but we have to grind through the adversity we are facing and keep at it regardless of the outcome."

Mayville State will head to Tucson, Arizona to playing the Tucson Invitational during spring break. Their first game is Monday, March 9th and they will play 9 games throughout the week. For full schedule details visit: https://msucomets.com/sports/softball/schedule
