Eagle, Neb. - Mayville State Men's & Women's Golf rounded out their season last week at the NSAA Championships which was played at the Woodland Hills Golf Course in Eagle, Nebraska.
"Day one was brutal in terms of wind, 30 mph with a lot of crosswinds on a tight course," said head coach John Murphy. "One of the things we'll need to work on this summer is how to adjust our trajectories on tee shots in particular to minimize the wind's impact, even if it means sacrificing some distance."
"Our men's team was able to beat Dickinson State on the day, but they got us by just a few shots for all 4 days. Both teams improved significantly from last year's NSAA spring event, the men shaved 55 shots off their team score while the women's team improved by 128 strokes! We've made very good progress this season, now we need to keep that mindset for the summer," added Murphy.
Freshman Satchel Tickel was Mayville State's first All-Conference golfer since Kory Bartels in 1991; he was named to the first team. Damian Pokrzywinski & Masen Nowacki were both named to Honorable Mention.
With Tickel, Pokrzywinski and Nowacki all returning next year, the men's side will have a very strong core heading into the Frontier conference.
The Comets will transition from the North Star Athletic Association to the Frontier Conference starting in the fall of 2025. The Frontier Conference will have 9 teams next year and among those teams are Dickinson State, Valley City State, Bellevue, MSU-Northern, University of Providence, Carroll College, Montana Tech & Mayville State.
So far, Comets Golf will participate in two Frontier events in the fall - one at Dickinson & one at Rocky Mountain. They will participate in the Frontier Golf Championships in Phoenix, Arizona - date is to be determined.
"We say goodbye to four graduates – Brandon Albrecht, Eli Smith, Sam Preston and Joey Carr. These four were vital to getting our program off the ground and rolling. Thanks for all the hard work," commented Murphy. "Right now we have four men and two women committed for next year, with hopefully three to four more joining us before the fall."
