Fergus Falls, Minn. - Mayville State Comets Men's & Women's Golf traveled to Fergus Falls to compete in the Spartan Invitational this past Sunday & Monday. History was made as the women's team captured their first team title in school history, and Erik Bjorndahl won Mayville State's first individual men's title in over 30 years.
Kambree Hauglie shattered her own 18 hole record on the first day by shooting an 83, which included a sizzling 39 on the front and a birdie to finish her round. Solid supporting rounds by Annika Reierson, Isabel Helde and Bethany Holter allowed the Comets to open up a 34 shot lead over Alexandria Tech.
On the men's side, Erik Bjorndahl held a one shot lead after 18 holes after carding a 72. Kaniel Ricker and Bryson Harder shot 77 and 79 respectively and in 4th place after day one.
"Kam played a fantastic round today, and finishing with a birdie on hole 18 is always a great way to finish the round," said head coach John Murphy. "Sometimes players put a little too much pressure on themselves to play well at their home course, but Erik didn't get ahead of himself. I was very impressed with his focus today."
The Comets were able to keep the good vibes going on day two as Erik continued his strong play to eventually win the event by six shots with a two day total of 143. Bryson Harder (76) and Michael Felchle (77) finished in the top 10 to allow the men to jump up to 3rd place for the event on the team side.
On the women's side, both Annika Reierson and Emma Wiseman shot personal bests of 92 and 100 to keep Alexandria Tech at bay and win the team competition. Hauglie finished 3rd overall, Reierson was 7th and Helde took 9th place.
"I can't say enough with how we handled the adversity over the last week. It would have been very easy to lose focus and go through the motions, but our team really locked in and played well. I couldn't be more proud of them," added Murphy.
