Softball makes statement by sweeping DAC conference opener

The Mayville State University softball team opened Dakota Athletic Conference play over the weekend when they traveled to Madison, SD to take on the Dakota State University Trojans. The Comets made a loud statement by sweeping all four games of the weekend to start 4-0 in the conference. MSU outscored DaSU 47-18 in the series.

Game 1: Mayville State 8 – Dakota State 7
Mayville State got the weekend's scoring going right away in the first inning after a wild Trojan pitch allowed a Comet to reach home plate. Angelique Macias would then hit a solo home run in the top of the second to extend MSU's lead to 2-0. But DSU would answer in the bottom of the frame to pull back within one.

The Trojans scored three times in the bottom of the fourth inning to gain their first lead of the game at 4-2. But Mayville State regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning with four runs scored for a 6-4 lead. With bases loaded and one out situation for DSU in the bottom of the sixth frame, the Trojans hit a 3-RBI triple to give the Trojans a 7-6 lead.

Krista Hendricks hit an RBI single and Katie Corbin added an RBI double to give the Comets 8-7 lead in the top of the seventh inning, which proved to be enough for the win.

Angelique Macias led the Comets in offense with three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs.

Game 2: Mayville State 9 – Dakota State 3
The Comet offense showed their power in the second game of the series. MSU jumped out to a 9-0 lead with two runs in the third inning, five runs in the fifth, and two more in the sixth. The Trojans tried to put together a rally in the last two innings but were only able to come up with three runs.

For Mayville State, Angelique Macias and Jamie Scott each had a double. Jessica Flores added two hits. Elizabeth Best-Still and Macias each recorded two RBIs

Day two of the series saw the Comets take complete control. MSU took both games of the day with identical scores of 15-4.

Game 3: Mayville State 15 – Dakota State 4
Cara Delgado hit an RBI single to score Candyce Dallas to open up the scoring and give Mayville State a 1-0 lead. The Comets would put three more runs on the board in the third inning. After putting up one run in both the first and second, the offense used a powerful third inning to put five more runs on the score board for a lead of 7-4. After adding one more in the fifth inning, MSU put the game away in the sixth with an outburst for seven additional runs for a final score of 15-4
