The Mayville State University softball team made the short drive up I-29 to take on the University of North Dakota on Thursday, April 14 in non-conference action. The NCAA DI Fighting Sioux were too much for the Comets as UND swept both games from MSU.
Game 1: Mayville State 2 – North Dakota 10
North Dakota started the scoring in the bottom of the second. The Sioux put up three runs in the second and followed it up with three more in the third. UND help a 7-0 lead after adding one more run in the fourth inning.
The Comets began to put together a rally in the fifth inning.
Alexis Franco and
Carlee Cork made it to home plate to put two on the scoreboard for the MSU. But that was all the offense that MSU would get.
UND went on to take the first game 10-2.
Game 2: Mayville State 2 – North Dakota 8
The second game started out much the same way with UND taking the early lead. The Sioux scored in the bottom of the first and second innings and added two more in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Another run in the fifth extended that lead to 5-0.
Once again the Comets tried to put together a rally. In the sixth inning,
Carlee Cork was hit by a wild pitch to reach first base.
Candyce Dallas would take advantage of this two batters later. Dallas stepped up to home plate and hit a two-run homerun to get the Comets on the scoreboard.
UND would add three more to finish the game with the 8-2 win.
The series moves Mayville State to 9-17 overall. The Comets are 5-3 in Dakota Athletic Conference play. MSU returns to action this Saturday and Sunday as they travel to Spearfish, SD to take on conference foe Black Hills State University.
