JAMESTOWN, N.D. –
Cassie Ziemer had seven kills and
Paige O'Connor tallied 11 digs but the Mayville State volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to the University of Jamestown Saturday night at the Hansen Center in the NSAA conference championship match. Set scores were 18-25, 19-25, and 13-25.
The match was the third of the season and concluded the season for the Comets. After the match, NSAA commissioner Cory Anderson honored both teams on representing our new conference very well in the inaugural season.
Ziemer led the Comets (21-18 overall, 6-2 NSAA) with seven kills in 11 attempts as Mayville State hit .167 as a team. Jamestown (26-8, 8-0), meanwhile hit .336 and was led by Sarah Becker, who collected 17 kills.
O'Connor finished with 11 digs and led the Comets in that category once again this season. The freshman ended her first season at MSU with 595 digs.
Jamestown narrowly held the dig advantage, 46 to 40, and had 43 assists to the Comets' 22, 18 of which were picked up by
Katie Wangberg. The teams were even in blocks with both accumulating five in the match.
Wangberg tallied a double double after adding 10 digs to go along with her 18 assists. The junior also finished with six kills in the match.
The Jimmies jumped out to a quick lead in the first set causing two early MSU timeouts. The Comets battled back before the Jimmies ended the first set with a 25-18 victory. UJ kept it rolling in the second set as they won 25-19 to take a commanding 2-0 lead. Set three saw the Jimmies keep their foot on the gas and finish off the set, match, and season for MSU as they won 25-13.
Mayville State finishes the season with 21 wins and 18 losses. After falling to 3-11 on September 13
th the Comets turned it around to finish the season strong. MSU went 18-7 in their final 25 matches including 13 victories by way of a 3-0 sweep. The season ends with a defeat in the first ever NSAA conference championship match.
