MAYVILLE, N.D. – The ball definitely bounced the Comets way on Wednesday night as they made quick work of the Valley City State University Vikings in a 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-20) sweep that lasted just over one hour.
MSU wasted little time to set the tone as a quick 7-1 spurt in the first set forced a Viking timeout. The Comets kept it rolling after the break as they got ahead 14-3 before VCSU took their second timeout of the match in the first set. It didn't slow down from there as the Vikings lost the first set 25-9.
Valley City came out ready to play in the second set as they kept on course with Mayville State through the first 11 points for both teams. The Comets called a time out with the score locked at 11. The two teams went back and forth from there, but Mayville State put the Vikings away for good after a
Josette Glatt kill gave the Comets the serve back and Valley City's Aurissa Martens sent one into the net to end the match 25-20.
The third set proved to be the toughest of the night. The Vikings weren't ready to go down easy and they battled the Comets even for 17 points. After a timeout with the Comets leading 19-17 the team took control of the match for good. Glatt sent the Comets to the NSAA conference championship game with an emphatic kill on the final play of the match. The Comets won the third set 25-20.
Glatt played an excellent game with 13 kills on 20 attempts for a .550 hitting percentage. After Glatt the Comets got 8 kills out of
Remington Werner and 7 from
Cassie Ziemer.
The Comets out-hit their opponent (.337 to .059) as setter
Katie Wangberg had another good all-around game with 30 assists, 8 digs, and five kills to keep the offense rolling. The offensive dominance could be attributed to the Comets committing just 12 attack errors by their oppontent.
The defense did a great job as well with the Comets having an advantage in digs 50-33. Good defense helped the Comet offense record more kills (43 to 31) on less attempts (92 to 118) than the Vikings.
Paige O'Connor led the team in digs with 18, followed by Wangberg and
Katie Kolness with 8 apiece.
Mayville State University (21-17 overall, 7-2 NSAA) will play for the NSAA conference championship in its inaugural season this Saturday (November 9
th, 2013) in Jamestown, North Dakota against the Jimmies. It will be the third match-up of the season between the two teams, with the Comets looking to avenge two earlier season losses.
