Mayville State Baseball Opens Season with a Pair of Wins

The Mayville State Baseball team traveled to Minneapolis on February 20th to open their 2013 campaign at the Metrodome. The Comets took on the University of Concordia Moorhead.

The Comets wasted no time scoring their first run of the 2013 season. In the first inning Phillip Steer was hit by a pitch and later scored on a single from Kurtis McCallum. It turned out to be a pitchers duel with neither team scoring another run until the 5th inning when the Comets found a spark from Johnny Pistulka who hit a leadoff triple. Sam Thielen then came up and squeezed in Pistulka to bring the score to 2-1. That was all the Comet pitching staff needed to solidify the win. Victor Sokolofsky pitched 4 innings giving up no runs while striking out three. Out of the bullpen was Aaron Dick and Duell Higbe who held the Cobbers in check with a final score of 2-1.

In game two the Cobbers jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in the first inning. The Comets responded with four runs in the 5th inning and never looked back winning by a final score of 5-2. The Comets were led by Bryan Jacklitch who scored twice. Johnny Pistulka went 1-2 with an RBI and Phillip Steer went 1-4 with a run scored. Alex Brockpahler picked up the win for the Comets and Darin Stanislawski earned a save in the Comet win.

The Comets take their 2-0 record back to the Metrodome for a pair of games against the University of Minnesota Crookston on Wednesday, February 27th . Game time is set for 9:45 pm.
