The Mayville State softball team has been struggling to find some dry ground to play on this season. Valley City State has been much in the same boat, but thanks to the new artificial turf that the football team put in at VCSU the teams found a place to re-live the rivalry.
In game one the Comets wasted no time getting on the board. The first 3 innings saw the Comets chip away with a run each inning. Through 3 innings the score was tied 3-3. The fifth and sixth innings were tough ones for the Comets as they gave up 2 and 3 runs respectively. The Comets didn't have enough juice in the tank to overcome the 5 run deficit and fell by a final of 5-8.
Defensively the Comets were hindered with 5 errors.
Katrina Newman went all 6 innings giving up 8 earned runs while striking out 13. Offensively the Comets were led by
Courtney Priddie who went 3-4 with two doubles and 2 runs.
Krista Brustad had a nice game for the Comets as she went 1-2 with a solo home run.
Jaime Scott also chipped in going 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Valley City State came up swinging in game 2 as they added 3 runs in the top of the first inning. It didn't look good for Mayville State after 3 innings of play they were down 6-1. The Comets responded with a monster 4th inning. Sparked by a
Katrina Newman home run, the Comets scored 6 runs to knot the score at 7. Each team added another run and an extra inning was needed to determine the winner. The Vikings managed 2 runs in the top of the 8th. That was just enough as the Comets came up with only 1. When the dust finally settled the final was 10-9 in favor of the Vikings.
Offensively the Comets were led by
Katrina Newman who went 3-4 with 3 RBI's.
Alexxa Sanabria and
Courtney Priddie also had a nice game going 3-5 respectively. Jamie Scott also chipped in a 2-5 outing with 2 RBI's.
Katie Rieu picked up the loss going 7 2/3 innings while striking out 4.
The Comets are in action again today as they travel to Valley City State for another double header. Game time is set for 12 pm.
