The Comets Football team traveled to Lawrence, Kansas on Saturday to battle Haskell University. The Comets used a variety of big plays to sprint out in front and cruised to a 47-20 victory.
Rashad Flanders got the Comets rolling right away with a 75 yard TD run on the third play from scrimmage.
John Poppe then took the game over with three TD passes, a 27 yard strike to
Dantrel Horne, then a pair of bombs to
Lance Jackson covering 65 and 41 yards. After one quarter, the Comets had raced out to a 27-0 lead. A
Jacob Lawrence 5 yard run boosted the lead to 35-0 to end the first half. Haskell used a series of big plays of their own to climb within striking distance, with a 50 yard punt return TD and a 61 yard TD catch from Jennara Bollin and a 48 yard run from Marcus McVay, cutting the Comet lead down to 35-20 after 3 quarters. Flanders scored his 2nd TD of the day on a 4 yard run and
Jacob Grosz finished off the scoring with an 80 yard interception return, making the final score 47-20.
Leaders on offense included Poppe with 249 passing yards and 4 touchdowns and Flanders with his 2nd consecutive 200+ yard game (230) and 2 scores. Also, Jackson (6-152) and Horne (6-101) cracked the century mark in receiving yards and combined for 3 touchdown catches. Grosz led the defense with 9 tackles, 1 sack and the 80 Int return TD and
John Lamour picked off 2 Haskell passes.
This victory evened the Comets record to 2-2 on the season. After 3 games on the road, the Comets return home this Saturday for a game against Dickinson State. Gametime is 1pm.
