Comets FB Handle Waldorf in NSAA Matchup

Box Score The Comets Football team looked to get back on track in the NSAA when they hosted the Waldorf Warriors on Saturday. The Comets passing game proved too much for Waldorf as Mayville State won 35-28.

The first quarter was packed full of action, as Waldorf opened the scoring with a 55 yard interception return for a TD from Dubem Awuzie on the Comets first drive. The Comets tied the game later in the first as Andrew Blake found Dantrel Horne for a 23 yard scoring strike. The Warriors took the ensuing kickoff and drove down the field, retaking the lead on a Maliek Stephens one yard TD run. The Comets were able to knot the game again in the second, as Blake connected with Khari Kimbrough from 19 yards out, making the score 14 all. Just before the end of the half, the Comets got fantastic field position from a Waldorf turnover and took advantage with another Blake-Kimbrough TD. The Comets went into halftime with a 21-14 advantage.

Neither team was able to break into the end zone in the third, so the Comets held on to their seven point lead. Early in the fourth, Mayville State padded their advantage as Dondrei Hubbard burst into the end zone from five yards out to make the score 28-14. Blake and Kimbrough were not finished, as the two combined for their third touchdown of the day from 17 yards out with 6:30 to go. Hilton Joseph led the Warriors on a frantic comeback, as he hit Samuel Huntley and then Ja'Ron Kellem with a minute left to bring the score to 35-28. The Comets were able to corral the onside kick and run out the clock, winning 35-28.

For the Comets, Blake threw for 271 yards and four scores, Kimbrough caught 9 of those passes for 105 yards and three TDs, Hubbard eclipsed the century mark with 102 yards rushing and a touchdown. Defensively, it was a team effort, as four different players collected turnovers and three different players added three sacks.

For the Warriors, Joseph finished with 122 and the two scores, Stephens added 30 rushing yards and a TD and Huntley had 7 catches for 92 and a touchdown. On defense, Sione Aonga and Trent Jones combined for 20 tackles and 5 tackles for loss.

The victory evened the Comets record at 3-3, 1-1 in conference. Mayville State hits the road next Saturday as they face long-time rival Jamestown, kickoff is at 1pm.
