Comets FB Upset #25 Dakota State on the Road

The Comets Football team traveled to South Dakota on Saturday to battle the #25 Dakota State Trojans. The Comets were able to withstand a frantic Dakota State comeback and pull off the upset 27-25.

Neither defense gave an inch in the first quarter, as the Comets recovered a Trojan fumble and Dakota State's defense stifled any sustained Comet drives. Mayville State broke through in the 2nd quarter, as Dondrei Hubbard struck paydirt from a yard out to put the Comets up 7-0. Later in the quarter, the Trojans connected on a short field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 which is how the half ended. The Comets recovered a muffed punt early in the second and made Dakota State pay, as Andrew Blake found Khari Kimbrough from 13 yards out to make the score 14-3. The Trojans took the ensuing kickoff and marched down the field, eventually scoring on an eight yard TD pass, trimming the lead to 14-10. Mayville State came right back and expaned their lead back to 11, as Blake and Kimbrough connected again, this time from five yards out. The score remained that until halfway through the fourth when the Trojans capped off a 97 yard drive with a touchdown and 2pt conversion, making the score 21-18. The Comets responded again, as Blake found Julian Delgado on a 48 yard strike, and boosted the lead to nine, 27-18. Dakota State was not finished, as three Comet penalties gave them needed yards and they managed to score from five yards out to cut the lead to 27-25. The Comets were able to recover an onside kick and run down most of the clock, leaving the Trojans with 80 yards in 35 seconds. The Comets did not allow even a first down as they finished strong to win 27-25.

On offense, Blake threw for 196 yards and three scores, Hubbard rumbled for 67 yards and a TD, and Kimbrough caught five passes for 71 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Marlon Bennett led the way with 14 total tackles, and the team recovered three fumbles.

The victory evened the Comets record at 4-4, 2-2 in the North Star. Mayville State hosts #12 Dickinson State for their home finale on Saturday, kickoff is at 1pm.
