Box Score The Comets Football team returned home Saturday looking to spring another upset against a ranked team, this time the #16 Dickinson Blue Hawks. The Comets were unable to overcome a 20-0 1st quarter deficit to fall 41-28.
The teams traded punts for the first part of the opening stanza, until the Blue Hawks scored on a 19 yard touchdown pass from Hayden Gibson to Seth Ewoniuk to make the score 6-0. On the ensuing possession, Cain Boschee picked off a Comet pass at midfield, and Dickinson took advantage with another Gibson TD pass, this time to Trey Boone from 22 yards out. Dickinson forced another interception, this one by Robert Sterling at the Mayville State 31. Kaler Ray scored on a keeper from 16 yards to boost the Blue Hawks lead to 20-0. The Comets got going to start the 2nd quarter, as they marched down the field and scored on an

Julian Delgado strike to cut the lead to 20-8. Later in the quarter, Jed Fike broke through the Comet line and sprinted 40 yards for a touchdown, as the Blue Hawks pushed the lead to 27-8. Mayville State responded by putting together a 14 play 75 yard drive that ended with a
Dondrei Hubbard six yard TD run on fourth down to make the score 27-14 going into halftime.
The teams started the second half trading punts once again. The Comets strung another long drive together, which included a 25 yard play off a fake punt, but were unable to punch the ball into the end zone on fourth down. However, Mayville got those points back and
Jason Smith stepped in front of a Blue Hawk pass at the 43 and raced into the end zone and trimmed the deficit to a one possession game. The Comets attempted an onside kick but Dickinson recovered. The Blue Hawks took advantage of the field position and scored right away in the fourth quarter on Ray's second TD run of the game, and they expanded their lead to 13, 34-21. The Comets special teams were able to block a punt later in the fourth, but the Comets were unable to take advantage. The Blue Hawks were able to convert their next drive into a touchdown, as Boone added a six yard TD run to his TD catch. With a minute left, the Comets blocked a second punt and
Desmond Earles corralled the ball in the end zone to make the score 41-27. The Comets onside kick was unsuccessful and Dickinson was able to run out the clock.
For the Comets, Blake passed for 130 yards and a score, Hubbard rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown and
Chris Mayes caught five passes for 39 yards. Defensively, Holmes added seven tackles to his pick-six and
Nick Xalis finished with six tackles and a sack.
For the Blue Hawks, Gibson passed for 158 yards and two TDs, Fike (96) and Ray (90) combined for 186 yards and three scores and Ewoniuk had four receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Thomas Sease racked up 16 tackles and Drew Johnson recorded 15 tackles.
The loss drops the Comets record to 4-5, 2-3 in conference. Mayville State finishes their season next Saturday at Presentation College.
