The Comets Football team traveled to Iowa on Saturday to battle the NCAA Division II Quincy Hawks. Considering the Hawks beat a FCS (NDSU/UND level) school the week before, the Comets had their work cut out for them. After giving the Hawks all they could handle in the first half, Quincy eventually overwhelmed the Comets 64-7.
Both defenses dug in early, as neither team scored in the first quarter.
Blaine Miller recovered a Quincy fumble on 4th and Goal to wipe out a potential scoring drive, that was the highlight of the first quarter. The Hawks broke through early in the 2nd quarter with a short touchdown run. The Comets knotted the game at 7 when
Andrew Blake found
Raymond Flanders for a 17 yard scoring strike. The Hawks regained the lead with 31 seconds left in the half on a QB keeper, and the Comets went into the locker room trailing by 7. Not much to report on the second half, as the floodgates opened and the Hawks scored seven TDs and a safety while they shut down the Comets offense.
Offensively, Flanders caught 3 passes for 35 yards and a TD, while Superior Reed added 63 yards. Defensively,
Damion Sanders collected 11 tackles,
Nick Xalis recorded 10 tackles, and Miller added 8 tackles to his fumble recovery.
The loss evens the Comets record at 1-1. Mayville State plays Wisconsin-Stout at home Saturday September 17th for Farmer's Bowl weekend. Kickoff is at 100.
