Box Score The Comets Football team returned home to face the Wisconsin-Stout Blue Hawks Saturday. Unfortunately, five Comet turnovers led to 17 points for the Blue Hawks leading to a 23-13 loss.
Both defenses dug in early in the first quarter, as neither team were able to move the ball. A Comet interception deep in their own territory led to the Blue Hawks hitting a FG to take an early 3-0 lead. Early in the second, another Comet interception proved pivotal, as Stout marched 87 yards and finished the drive with a five yard QB keeper, making the score 10-0. A few minutes later, the Comets took advantage of a Blue Hawk turnover, as
Ryan Henderson returned an interception to the Stout 1 yard line.
Andrew Blake connected with Dontrel Horne to cut the deficit to 10-7. After forcing a Stout punt, the Comets rolled down the field, with
L.J. McMorris slicing into the end zone from the 4 to take a 13-10 lead. Two Personal Foul penalties by the Comets gave the Blue Hawks life at the end of the half, and they took advantage with a 52 yard FG to tie the game at half 13-13.
On the first possession of the second half, a Mayville State fumble gave the Blue Hawks new life. Once again, Stout made the Comets pay for that turnover as they eventually scored on a six yard TD run to retake the lead 20-13. Both defenses stiffened up the rest of the third, but the Blue Hawks tacked on a FG early in the fourth to add to their lead. Midway through the fourth,
Damion Sanders forced a fumble and returned it to the Stout 25, giving Mayville State new life. Unfortunately, the Comets missed a FG and came away with no points. Stout was able to run out the clock to take the victory 23-13.
McMorris tallied 70 yards rushing (1 TD) and 69 yards receiving to lead the Comet attack. Horne added 6 catches for 59 yards to go with his TD. Henderson added 10 tackles with three of those for losses to his INT, and
Will Ervin recorded nine tackles.
The loss drops the Comets record to 1-2 on the season. Mayville State hosts the Trinity Bible College Lions on Saturday 9/24, kickoff is at 500 pm.
