Box Score The Mayville State football team struggled to get their offense going early in Saturday afternoon's contest against Montana State University - Northern. The Comets were forced to punt in almost every possession in the first half, but Creighton Pfau was able to connect with Josh Portillo to get on the board with 5:16 left before halftime. Meanwhile, the Lights were able to put together scoring drives and forced a safety early on to take the lead going into the half, 7-19.Â
MSU came out in the second half with a couple six-play scoring drives in the third quarter, the Comets defense was able stiffen up and only allow a field goal to MSU-Northern in the opening quarter of the second half. With the game tied going in the fourth, MSU-Northern's quarterback, Tommy Wilson, was able to string together a key drive that ended up with a three-yard Dylan Cook touchdown. Creighton Pfau was picked off by Garet Fowler on the first play of the following drive, the Lights were able to capitalize by punching in another touchdown on the ground by Trey Blanchard.
MSU was stopped on downs on the next drive and MSU-Northern was able to put the game away with another scoring drive, making it 22-43. The Comets added another touchdown late, but the onside kick attempt was unsuccessful. Time ran out on MSU with Montana State-Northern taking it, 22-49.Â
Creighton Pfau led all passers for the day going 30-52 for 349 yards and four touchdowns along with the one interception. Trey Blanchard was able to have a big day on the ground for the Lights, rushing for 186 yards and a score on 28 carries. Trent Momon had a huge day receiving for the Comets with eight catches for 136 yards and three touchdowns, Joshua Portillo was able to haul in six catches of his own for 64 yards and touchdown. Jason Holmes was all over the field for the Comets with 18 total tackles, Skyler Berry added twelve of his own. Jake Norby and Garet Fowler led the Lights defensively with ten and nine tackles, respectively.Â
The Comets continue action next Saturday at home against Presentation College. Kickoff is set for 2:00 PM.
