Box Score The Mayville State football team dropped its home opener to Sterling College in Saturday afternoon's Farmers Bowl.
The Comets kept battling back all day, responding to touchdowns by the Warriors with scores of their own. But, Sterling College was able to build a big enough lead late in the third and in the beginning of the fourth to survive a late comeback by MSU. It seemed like every time things started to turn in favor of the Comets, Sterling had a swift answer and capitalized on any mistake that MSU made.
Creighton Pfau was able to put up big numbers again going 26-48 through the air with 436 yards and two touchdowns. He also led the team in rushing with 143 yards on 11 attempts and added another score on the ground.
Joshua Portillo was able to haul in eight catches fo 144 yards and a score,
Trent Momon added five catches for 114 yards, and
Jacob Lawrence added a receiving touchdown along with three catches and 61 yards.
Douglas Koepplin led the way defensively with 12 total tackles and forced fumble, and
Donte Stevens added eight of his own.
Jason Holmes also had a nice game with seven tackles and an interception.
The Comets resume action on the road in South Dakota when they take on Dakota State University next Saturday at 6:00 PM.
