ABERDEEN, SD - Mayville State stayed in it until the end, but Dakota State University pulled away late in a 4-1 victory in the first game of the double-header on Saturday. The game was tied at one with Dakota State batting in the bottom of the sixth when Audrey Kosman laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring what would eventually be the winning run for the Trojans.
Dakota State got things going in the second inning when Xitali Lopez doubled on a 2-1 count, scoring Jasmin Lucero to make things 1-0.
Mayville State was able to get a run in the sixth off an
AJ Tinoco homerun over the centerfield fence to tie things up at one run apiece in the top of the sixth. But, the Trojans were able to respond with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to take the win in the first game.Â
Shaye Kemball took the loss for the Comets. She allowed ten hits and four runs over six innings, striking out three. Xitali Lopez, Tatum Ronke, and Melissa Krapf each racked up multiple hits for Dakota State. Lopez went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Dakota State in hits for the day.
In the second game of the double-header, the Comets looked like they were going to get the victory, but Dakota State pulled away late in a 6-5 victory. The Trojans were down 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Kailee McFadden singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs to put DSU ahead with the eventual game-winner.
Dakota State opened up the scoring in the second inning when Taylor Poe grounded out into a fielder's choice, scoring a run to make things 1-0, then the Trojans tacked on a couple more runs in the fourth inning with RBI singles by Audrey Kosman and Taylor Poe to make it 3-0.Â
Mayville State was able to get on the board in the fifth after
Danielle Sheridan scored, then
AJ Tinoco belted a 3-run homer in the sixth to give the Comets a 4-3 lead. The Comets managed another run in the inning after a
Jade Ledochowski double to give Mayville State a 2-run lead.
But, the Trojans answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to give them the 1-run advantage and the victory on Saturday in a close battle for the second game of the double-header.Â
Stefani Gollin led Dakota State to victory on the pitcher's mound. She surrendered one run on three hits over five innings, striking out three. Xitali Lopez and Kelly Drake entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief for the Trojans.
Haley Kravetz took the loss for the Comets. She lasted six innings, allowing ten hits and six runs while striking out three and walking one.
Mayville State scattered seven hits in the game.
Jade Ledochowski and
Danielle Sheridan each had multiple hits for Comets. Ledochowski led Comets with three hits in four at bats on the day.Â
