ABERDEEN, SD - Mayville State took the lead late in game one on Sunday morning in a 10-9 victory over Dakota State University. The game was tied at nine with the Comets batting in the top of the seventh when
Jade Ledochowski's sac fly scored
Amanda Whitley for the game-winning run for the Comets.
Despite falling down by seven runs in the fifth inning, Dakota State fought back to make things a battle down the stretch, Xitali Lopez, Nicole Stewart, Jasmin Lucero, Peyton Brokiewicz, and Tatum Ronke powered the comeback rally with RBIs for the Trojans.
The Comets got things started in the first inning when Alexandria Tinoco hit a 3-run homerun on a 2-1 count to give MSU the early lead. Mayville State was able to tack on three more runs in the third and tallied three runs in the fifth inning with
Megan Rabe,
Amanda Whitley, and
Breeana Martinez each driving in runs for Mayville State.
But, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Dakota State rallied and tied things up at nine when Tatum Ronke doubled on a 0-2 count, scoring two runs.
The sac fly by Jade Ledocowski proved to be the difference in game one, giving the Comets the victory over Dakota State.
Shaye Kemball earned the win for the Comets. She went five innings, allowing six runs on seven hits.
Haley Kravetz threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Audrey Kosman took the loss for Dakota State surrendering nine runs on nine hits over five innings, striking out four.
The Comets smacked two home runs on the day.
Danielle Sheridan went yard in the third inning and
AJ Tinoco went for the 3-run long ball in the first inning.
Mayville State totaled 11 hits in the game. Kemball, Rabe, Tinoco, and Martinez all had multiple hits for Comets. Kemball led Comets with three hits in three at bats.
The Comets watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 6-0 loss in game two on Sunday.
Mayville State struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing the Trojans. Dakota State University got on the board in the first inning when Nicole Stewart doubled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.
An error by the Comets in the second innings led to more runs for the Trojans, and then RBI singles in the third and fourth innings put Dakota State on their way to the 6-0 win.Â
Xitali Lopez was the winning pitcher for Dakota State University. She allowed three hits and shut the Comets out over seven innings, striking out three and walking one.
Haley Kravetz took the loss for the Comets. She allowed 12 hits and six runs over six innings, striking out two.
Breeana Martinez,
Shaye Kemball, and
Jade Ledochowski each collected a hit for the Comets.
