VALLEY CITY, ND - Mayville State lost the lead late in a 5-4 defeat to Valley City State in the first game of a double-header on Saturday. The Vikings were down 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Emily Smith doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs to give VCSU the lead and the win.

Valley City State got things started in the second inning when Brittney Manthie singled on a 1-2 count, scoring Voni Kulp, the Vikings would add two more with RBIs from Tatum Lundin and Joelle Aiello to make things 3-0.

The Comets would respond with a run in the third and three runs in the fourth inning. The rally was led by a base hit from Shaye Kemball that scored two runs and another RBI from AJ Tinoco later in the inning, giving Mayville State a 4-3 lead.

But, the Vikings would get the last laugh with the 2-run double in the sixth inning to give VCSU the win in game one. 

Haley Butterfield got the win for Valley City State, she allowed five hits and four runs over three innings.

Shaye Kemball took the loss for Comets. She went six innings, allowing five runs on ten hits and striking out five.

Valley City State had ten hits in the game. Kadie Anderson and Joelle Aiello both managed multiple hits to lead the way for the Vikings at the plate.

Mayville State watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover late in a 7-2 loss to the Vikings in game two. Valley City State scored on a single by Emily Smith in the first inning, a double by Tatum Lundin and a single by Kadie Anderson in the second inning to gain a lead that the Comets couldn't come back from.

In the bottom of the first inning, Valley City State tied things up at one. Emily Smith singled on a 0-2 count, scoring Joelle Aiello.

The Vikings took the lead for good with two runs in the second inning, Tatum Lundin doubled on a 2-2 count that scored a run, then Kadie Anderson singled on a 1-0 count scoring another. VCSU added two runs in the fourth and the sixth to add to their lead and ensure the win. 

Kathleen Gallais earned the win for Valley City State. She surrendered one run on four hits over three and a third innings, striking out three.

Haley Kravetz took the loss for MSU after surrendering seven runs on 15 hits over six innings, and striking out two.

The Comets racked up eight hits in the game. Meagn Rabe, Jade Ledochowski, and Shaye Kemball each collected two hits to lead Comets.

Valley City State University scattered 15 hits in the game. Joelle Aiello, Kelli Moore, Jayme Menard, and Smith each racked up multiple hits for Valley City State.
