PORTLAND, ND – The Comets stayed in it until the end, but Valley City State pulled away late in an 8-1 victory on Sunday afternoon's first game of the double-header.
The game was tied at one with the Vikings batting in the top of the sixth when Jayme Menard singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring Kathleen Gallais, then an RBI double from Kadie Anderson, and a base hit from Autumn Perry that drove in runs made things 5-1 in favor of VCSU.
The Vikings would add three more runs in the sixth, capped off with a base hit from Emily Smith that scored Kelsey Hamade to make it 8-1.
Nichole Reed was credited with the victory for the Vikings. She allowed three hits and one run over seven innings, striking out seven Comet batters.
Shaye Kemball took the loss for Comets after allowing 12 hits and eight runs over seven innings, striking out nine.
Valley City State racked up 12 hits in game one. Voni Culp, Emily Smith, Joelle Aiello, and Autumn Perry each managed multiple hits for to lead the Viklings at the plate in the game one win.
The Comets had trouble keeping up with the Vikings, once again, in game two of Sunday's double-header. The Vikings completed the sweep with a 9-1 win over Mayville State in the second game of the day.
The Vikings took advantage of a big second inning with RBI doubles from Jayme Menard and Kadie Anderson to make it 2-0, then later in the inning Emily Smith drove in Autumn Perry and Joelle Aiello to make it 5-0.
Megan Rabe was able to hit a solo shot over the center field fence for the Comets' only run. The Vikings tacked on runs in the third and the fifth to give the Vikings the win in game two of the double-header.
Haley Butterfield led the Vikings to victory in the circle on Sunday afternoon's second game. She lasted five innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out four Comet batters.
Haley Kravetz took the loss for Mayville State after going five innings, allowing 12 hits and nine runs while striking out three.
Valley City State tallied 12 hits in the game. Autumn Perry, Kadie Anderson, and Emily Smith all managed multiple hits for the Vikings. Perry led VCSU with three hits in three at bats in Sunday's game-two victory.
