Comets End Season in Tough Way

Box Score

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Comets suffered a heart-breaking defeat to end their season in their second game of the North Star Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon. Mayville State held a 3-2 lead in the bottom seventh inning, but fourth-seeded Bellevue ended the game in walk-off fashion with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning for a 4-3 victory.

After two-and-half scoreless innings, the Bruins scored twice in the bottom of the third. Alex Tooley led off with a single.  Michaela Miller hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Tooley to second base, then Grace Glotefelty hit an RBI double to score Tooley to give BU a 1-0 lead. The Bruins made it 2-0 after Erin Sharpe followed up with an RBI single to score Glotefelty.

The Comets started the top of the fifth inning with a bases loaded situation with no outs thanks to back-to-back walks drawn by Haley Kravetz and Kiana Ishikawa, then Danyelle Gutierrez reached safely after an error on a sac bunt play. Then, Megan Rabe hit a 2-RBI single to score Ishikawa and Gutierrez as the Comets knotted the game at 2-2.

Kiana Ishikawa then hit a single to start off the top seventh inning for Mayville State. She advanced to second base after a sacrifice bunt by Gutierrez. Then Shaye Kemball drilled an RBI double to deep right-center as the Comets earned their first lead of the game at 3-2.

But, Sarah Zeleny smashed a double to start the bottom seventh frame for BU, then tagged up to third after Grace Glotfelty hit a fly out to right field. With a 1-0 count at the plate for Kaitlyn Kinman, she hit an RBI double to score Zeleny to tie the game 3-3.  The next Bruins' batter drew a walk to set the stage for Maddie Siedlik. Siedlik came to the plate for the Bruins with the first three pitches thrown for a ball and the next two pitches for strikes, then she hit the walk-off RBI single to score Medick to end the Comets' season and advance the Bruins to the next round of the conference tournament.

Glotfelty led the Bruins with a double, a single and an RBI for Bellevue. Sharpe, Kinman and Siedlik each added a hit and an RBI, and Tooley and Zeleny each had a hit and a run scored.

Megan Rabe registered a single and drove in two runs for Mayville State. Shaye Kemball added a double and an RBI.

The Comets end their season with an overall record of 12-29 and an 8-18 mark against North Star opponents. The team will say good-bye to nine seniors. Megan Rabe, Danielle Sheridan, Kiana Ishikawa, Haley Kravetz, AJ Tinoco, Bailey Nordquist, Breeana Martinez, Annjeanett Urbano, and Jolene Ruiz will be missed next season, their dedication and hard work during their time at Mayville State have laid the foundation and set an example for future student-athletes to come.
