Shaye Kemball's 3-run home run in the top of the fifth inning wasn't enough to take down Jamestown in the opening round of the North Star Conference Tournament. The sophomore from Winnipeg, Manitoba put one over the left field fence on a 2-2 count to tie the game up 3-3 late in the game. But, Jamestown answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead and run away with a 5-3 win in game one on Friday.
Jamestown's Mikayla Frost was able to get on base to lead off the bottom of the fifth, then Tifani Schorzman doubled to deep right field bringing in Frost to regain the lead for the Jimmies. Schorzman would score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kassi Ward to make it 5-3.
The Jimmies jumped ahead early in the game, scoring a run in the first inning off an RBI double from Morgan Geiszler. Then Jamestown put two more up in the second with RBI base hits from Sydney Prussia and Emma Eller to give the Jimmies an early 3-0 lead.
Danyelle Gutierrez and Baily Nordquist were able to reach base in the top of the fifth to set the table for Kemball's 3-run blast that tied the game. Other than Kemball's home run, the Comets only had four other hits.
Jade Ledochowski provided two hits in three at bats for MSU, and
Danyelle Gutierrez and
Bailey Nordquist each added base hits.
Emma Keller, Tifani Schorzman, and Sydney Prussia led the way for Jamestown at the plate with a hit, an RBI, and a run scored from each of them.
Brittany Rheault earned the victory for Jamestown. She tossed five innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Kat Miska earned the save as she shut the door on the Comets in the final two innings, recording four strikeouts.
Kemball pitched a complete game defeat in the pitching circle for Mayville State. She gave up five runs (two unearned) on six hits and registered six strikeouts.
Mayville State now awaits the loser of No. 5 seed Dakota State (S.D.) and No. 4 seed Bellevue (Neb.) to play at 2 p.m. this afternoon.
