Box Score 2 LA CROSSE, WI and FOREST CITY, IOWA-- The Mayville State University Comets volleyball team split a weekend road swing, the beginning of their road trip that spans five games. A 3-0 loss Friday to Viterbo extended the Comets winless streak to two games, while Saturday's 3-1 win over the Waldorf Warriors tied the Comets league record at 2-2, heading into their final three games of the road stand.
Viterbo 3, Mayville State 0
The Comets held in all three matches on Friday night in La Crosse, Wisconsin, but it was Viterbo who walked away with a three set win over the Comets, winning 25-23, 25-19 and 25-18.
"I felt like we did a nice job coming out and playing a strong first and second set," head coach
Lindsey Johnson said. "We struggled to keep things going in set three, but had a nice run at the end of the match."
Mayville State was led defensively by
Jayden Warner's 20 digs, while
Amy Seim and
Hannah Bliss each had seven digs.
Elora Passa finished with 21 assists.
Kiana Johnson,
Madisen Knudsvig and
Ashley Pyburn each had two blocks, while Bliss led the Comets with nine kills, Johnson with seven and
Kaitlin Leier with five.
"Our defense played a very strong match," Johnson said.
Mayville State 3, Waldorf 1
The Waldorf Warriors came out strong in set one, taking a 16-8 lead at one time, en route to a 25-15 set one win, but that's the only win as the Comets came out firing in sets two and three, leaving Forest City, Iowa, with a 3-1 NSAA victory Saturday.
"We started out a little slow," Johnson said. "But after the first set, we found our groove both defensively and offensively."
Mayville State took a 3-2 lead, in set two, on a service error by Channing Manske, but then Waldorf jumped back to take a 5-3 just points later.
That's when the Comets battled back, behind strong serving by
Jordyn Lucas and kills by
Elora Passa and
Ashley Pyburn, capped off with a service ace by Lucas to make it 7-5.
Waldorf then battled back again, taking an 8-7 lead, before Mayville State countered with a 3-0 run of their own, regaining the lead 10-8.
Neither team was able to get a real advangtage, with the biggest lead being six throughout the match. Pyburn's kill on a Waldorf hit over the net ended set two, 25-20.
In the third set, back-to-back-to-back served by
Mason Hart, which led to kills by
Hannah Bliss and Pyburn, saw Mayville State take an early 3-0, one the Comets would never give away, defeating the Warriors 25-19 in set three, forcing a pivotal fourth set.
In set four, Mayville State took an early 3-0 lead on two attack errors by Waldorf, but the Warriors cut the lead to 3-2, before two more Comet points pulled Mayville State ahead by three, 5-2.
Midway through set four, with the Comets ahead 12-9, Mayville State knowcked off back-to-back-to-back points, on a pair of attack errors and a service error, putting the Comets in full control of the set and match. Mayville State walked away with set four, 25-20.
The win improves the Comets to 1-1 on the road, and gave Mayville State their first conference win of the season.
"It's always nice to get a win on the road," Johnson said. "Especially in conference play."
Bliss finished with 17 kills to lead the Comets. Three Comets were in double figures in digs, with
Jayden Warner picking up 31;
Amy Seim, 16; and
Hannah Bliss, 11.

The Comets continue their road conference swing on Wednesday, when they travel to rival Valley City State, for a 7 p.m. match. Then, on Saturday, the Comets travel out west to play Dickinson State University. The Blue Hawks and Comets will have a 3 p.m. first serve. The final game of the road stand will be Wednesday, October 9, when the Comets travel to Aberdeen, S.D., to take on the Presentation College Saints.
