Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker with No. 15 Bellevue

Box Score Mayville, N.D. - The Comets Volleyball team finished this week's action with a contest against the No. 15 ranked Bellevue Bruins. In a game full of momentum shifts, the Bruins managed to grab the last one in a five-set thriller.

Bellevue used a 10-1 run early in set one to jump out to an 13-5 lead The Comets were unable to any closer than 4 points before falling 25-15, giving an early lead to the Bruins.

Post game, head coach Katie Aasen said, "We played good volleyball and it was a fun and intense atmosphere. Unfortunately there were just periods there that our offense wasn't executing along with a few too many miscommunication errors, and it was Diurigen those times we struggled to win rallies."

Both teams struggled for control in set two before Bellevue scored four straight points to go up 16-13. Mayville State responded behind Thyra Peterick and tied the score back up at 18. The Bruins clung to a 22-21 lead, but Mayville scored the last four points of the set to win 25-22 and tie the match at one set apiece.

The Bruins were able to take another early lead in the third set and used a 7-1 run to go up 12-6. The Comets slowly chipped away at Bellevue's lead as Nicole Kortan's kill tied the game at 20. The Passa sisters slammed the door on Bellevue by scoring the final three points of the set to take a 25-22 victory.

Aasen also stated, "Eliminate some of our unnecessary errors tonight and the outcome of the match might be different. It's not just the last plays of a set that matter, it's everything we do leading up to that."

Set four was a roller-coaster for momentum. Bellevue again sprinted out to an early lead, with the Comets responded by scoring six straight points to retake the lead 16-15. However, this time it was the Bruins that finished strong, as they tallied the final eight points to win set four 25-18 and pushed the game into a fifth set.

Madison McKinnon dominated the early part of set five with two kills and a block, and the Comets took charge with a 5-0 lead, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. Bellevue flipped the script on Mayville State by scoring seven straight points of their own to lead 11-7. The Comets roared back with a 4-0 rally and knotted the score at 11. Unfortunately for the Comets, Bellevue made just enough plays to escape with a 15-13 win.

"Although the end result wasn't in our favor, it's proof we can compete with any team on any given night. However, I know this group isn't satisfied with just 'competing' with top teams and it hurts like any other loss," added Aasen.

McKinnon and Peterick dominated in the middle with a combined 21 kills and 15 blocks. Elora Passa collected 22 assists and 13 digs. Natalie Hadrava served up three aces and anchored the back line with 27 digs.

"I was proud of our willingness to make adjustments and play selfless volleyball by doing whatever it took to earn a point for our team. I have also been extremely pleased with our court awareness and everyone's contributions at keeping the ball alive. And to accompany our huge blocking efforts, Natalie and Emily excelled at their defensive jobs tonight," expressed Coach Aasen.

The Comets record now stands at 10-5, 2-2 in the North Star. The homestand continues with a non-conference tilt against the Concordia Cobbers. First serve is at 7:00pm.
