Mayville, N.D. - Head football coach,
Rocky Larson, announced Thursday the hiring of Jack Mullen and the promotion of current assistant coach,
Scott Olsen. Mullen & Olsen will be co-offensive coordinators at Mayville State.
"I can't wait to watch Coach Olsen and Coach Mullens construct an offense this spring. I am excited to see how we mix last year's offense with a few new wrinkles," said Larson.
Jack Mullen comes to the Comets from Friends University where he was a graduate assistant and a WR coach. This year, Friends University finished as conference champions, had their first playoff wins in school history and set the NAIA all-time rushing records.
Coach Mullen played for four years at Friends University where he was a quarterback in a spread system and a flexbone system. He was a three-time KCAC scholar-athlete. He is finishing his master's in education in May and his first day as a Comet coach will be March 3rd.
"After going through 19 interviews it became clear that Jack was the right person for the job. His ability to adopt his scheme with spread and flexbone was intriguing to us with playing in both systems," said Larson. "Coach Mullen is a great leader of men and came very highly recommended by multiple coaches. We cant wait for Jack to get up here and get started."
Scott Olsen will be promoted to Co-Offensive Coordinator with Mullen. Olsen has been on the Comets staff the past two seasons as the defensive line coach and is no stranger to the offensive side of the football. He constructed the offense at Hillsboro High School where he won three state titles and two runner up titles. Coach Olsen takes over on the offensive of the ball starting today.
"I am thrilled to add Scott to the offensive side of the ball. Scott knows our players and what their strengths and weaknesses are. He will have the ability to keep a lot of the same offense that we ran last year," added Larson. "Coach Olsen has been a huge asset to the Comets on the defensive side of the ball, I am excited to see how he can help lead our offense."
