Dickinson, N.D. - The Mayville State Comets Softball team entered the 2025 NSAA Conference Tournament as the No. 5 seed and faced No. 4 seeded Valley City State Thursday in the opening game of the tournament.
In game one, the Comets would go the distance, taking the Vikings to an 8 inning thriller, but Valley City would hit a walk off home run to send the Comets into the loser's bracket.
In game two, the Comets saw No. 3 seeded Bellevue where
Lacey Mathiowetz would pitch a complete game shut out and
Lindsey Tulla hit a 3 run home run to keep the Comets' season alive.
Saturday, Mayville State would see Valley City State for the 6th time this season. Things got off to a good start for the Comets, as they scored first, but suddenly spiraled in the 6th inning when the Vikings put up 12 runs, ending the Comets' season.
"The tournament was a fun atmosphere this year, I felt at the end of the season we were playing the best softball we had been all year. Going the distance with Valley in extra innings then taking out Bellevue was electric for our program," said head coach
Jordan Olson. "The last game against Valley just spiraled out of control for a number of reasons, but I have to say our players did a good job of just finishing the game the right way."
In senior
Mackenzie Hughes' last time on base of her career, she would steal second and take the stolen bases in a single season record with 20, previously held by Dayna Gutierrez back in 2018. Sophomore's
Lindsey Tulla &
Madison Terres would move to 3rd in hits in the record books, each of them racked up 53 this season.
Overall, the Comets finish 11-37 in their last year with the North Star Athletic Association.
"Obviously this season is far from what we expected nor are satisfied with but we definitely grew as a program in ways that aren't seen in the win column. Plus, we are returning such a core amount of starters so that makes me excited for what is to come for the future of Comet Softball," added Olson.
