Sioux Center, Iowa - The Mayville State University Softball team opened up their 2026 season at the ASB Dome Tournament hosted by Dordt University Friday where they found themselves against two top 25 ranked opponents.
In game one, the Comets managed to take down the Northwestern College Raiders who are ranked #17 nationally. In game two, they fell in a nail biter 1-2 to No. 12 Midland University who went to the NAIA College World Series just last year.
Game 1 - W 2-1
In the top of the 2nd inning, the lead off for the Raiders reached first and then second on a Comet error and was able to score on a single to centerfield to take the lead early.
Junior
Lindsey Tulla led the bottom of the 4th off with a solo moon shot over center field to tie the game 1-1 midway through.
The Raiders would load the bases with 1 out in the top of the 7th and the Comets defense would get out of the jam. In the bottom of the 7th, with 2 outs, senior
Antarez Sierra hit a single to centerfield putting the game winning run on base.
Skylar Beckel would come in to pinch run with Tulla up to bat.
Tulla would hit a double down the left field line and Beckel would find herself at home scoring the winning run to give the Comets their first win of the season.
Lacey Mathiowetz pitched a full game, striking out 6 and giving up just 2 hits.
Game 2 - L 1-2
The Comets took a short break and were back at it Friday night facing the Midland University Warriors in another nail biter.
Both pitchers kept things quiet until the 3rd where the Warriors were able to score two runs on two outs to take the 2-0 lead over the Comets midway through.
Baileigh Momberg kept the Midland hitters at bay keeping the Comets down just 2 entering the 7th inning.
Nevaeh Stinson drew a lead off walk and
Mackenzie Fuxa would follow suit as runners sat at 1st and 2nd with just one out.
Antarez Sierra hit an RBI single to give the Comets a run, however, Midland was able to get the final remaining two outs stranding runners at 1st & 2nd.
Baileigh Momberg pitched a full game, striking out four and only allowing Midland to sprinkle 6 hits throughout the evening.
