Softball ends Tucson Trip on a High Note

Tucson, Arizona – Mayville State Comet Softball battled weather for much of its spring break trip, spending more time adjusting travel plans than taking the field.

Originally scheduled to open the trip with four games in Wichita, Kansas on March 6 and 7, the Comets were forced to alter plans due to rain and arrived in Tucson earlier than expected.

After nearly five days on the road without competition, Mayville State finally returned to action Sunday falling 8-0 to University of Providence.

The Comets were back on the field Monday against Benedictine University Mesa and dropped a tight 2-0 decision despite a strong outing from Baileigh Momberg. Momberg pitched all seven innings, scattered seven hits, and struck out six while keeping Mayville State within striking distance throughout.

Tuesday brought another setback, as heavy rain at Lincoln Park washed out two more scheduled contests.

Mayville State managed to play one game Wednesday but came up short in a 10-1 loss to Ottawa University Arizona.

Thursday's slate featured two games, beginning with a narrow 3-2 loss to Indiana Tech, a team currently receiving votes in the national top 25 poll. The Comets then faced Dakota Wesleyan University, where the Tigers' offense produced an 11-4 win.

Friday brought a rematch with Dakota Wesleyan, and although Mayville State again came up short 12-8, the Comets responded later in the day with a 7-6 victory over Viterbo University.

The Comets closed the trip strong Saturday by adding two extra games to the schedule. Mayville State defeated Westcliff University 4-1 before earning one of its biggest wins of the season with a 3-2 victory over No. 19-ranked Midland University in a pitching duel.

The win over Midland marked Mayville State's third victory over a top-25 opponent this season.

Mayville State is scheduled to open Frontier Conference play Friday, March 20, in Madison, S.D. against Dakota State University, although forecasted snow accumulation could affect the weekend schedule.
