Softball team loses two close games during first day of spring trip in Arizona

Mayville State University's softball team had two tough games in Arizona to open up their spring trip, falling to the University of Great Falls by a score of 12-10 and coming up short against Patten University 14-11.

The Comets used a huge six-run inning in the bottom of the sixth to storm back and take a 10-8 lead late in the game against Great Falls, but UGF would answer back in the top of the final inning with a two-run home run to tie the game at 10-10 before two more doubles and a single propelled them to a 12-10 lead.

MSU would have a chance in the bottom of the seventh with hitters three, four, and five due up at the plate, but Great Falls stopped any MSU rally to hold on for the win.

"This was a tough game to lose," MSU softball coach Melissa Majerus said. "Offensively we did what we needed to do but there were a few too many errors for us and our pitching struggled as well. Giving up twelve runs is just a little too much."

Angelique Macias was 4-5 at the plate to lead the Comets and Cara Delgado was 3-for-5 with two runs batted in the lead the Comets in game number one.

In game number two Patten University jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead, scoring one in the first, three in the second, and one more in the third. Patten then stretched that lead with five more runs in the fourth to go up 10-1.

MSU wouldn't quit and scored three in the top of the fifth to make it 10-4. Patten answered back with a run of its own in the bottom of the fifth to make it 11-4. In the top of the sixth MSU scored four runs to make the score 11-8, but Patten would answer again with three runs in the bottom of the inning making the score 14-8. The Comets would score three in their final at bat for the final score of 14-11.

Cara Delgado had another impressive performance at the plate going 4-for-4 while Angelique Macias was 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. Elizabeth Best-Still was 2-for-4 with a home run.
