Softball has successful weekend at Black Hills State University

The Mayville State University softball team traveled to Spearfish, SD this weekend to take on Black Hills State University in Dakota Athletic Conference play. The Comets came away with two victories in the three game series. The weekend started off with a doubleheader on Saturday and concluded with a single game on Sunday.

Game 1: Mayville State 1 – Black Hills State 5
The Yellow Jackets took control of game one when they knocked in a run in the bottom of the third inning. They followed that up with a strong fourth inning, bringing home three more runs to jump out to a 4-0 lead.

The Comets got on the board when Elizabeth Best-Still got a RBI and drove Jessica Flores home. But it was all of the offense that MSU would get, finishing with only five hits. BHSU would add one more run to take the game by a final score of 5-1.

Game 2: Mayville State 11 – Black Hills State 5
The bats came alive for Mayville State in the second game of the day. BHSU once again got on the board first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning. But the bats began to warm up for MSU starting in the fifth. The Comets knocked in four runs in the fifth and followed them up with another in the sixth.

But the Comets really lit up the scoreboard in the seventh and final inning. MSU would rack up six runs in the inning, highlighted by a Candyce Dallas grand slam that sealed the victory for the Comets. Valea Crowder pitched a complete game for the win.

Game 3: Mayville State 4 – Black Hills State 2
The Comets finished the weekend in good fashion. MSU started the scoring with a run in the top of the third inning. They added two more in the fourth and one in the fifth to take the game 4-2. Crowder once again pitched the complete game, coming up with nine strike outs and allowing only four runs.

The wins put MSU at 11-18 overall and 7-4 in the DAC. The Comets return to non-conference action on Tuesday, April 19 when the junior varsity hosts North Dakota State College of Science. The varsity returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Minot State to continue conference play.
