Comet softball competes at home for first time this season

To say that the Mayville State softball team has had a tough schedule would be an understatement. The Comets played their first 32 games on the road.

After multiple home games had to be moved due to field conditions, MSU was finally able to take its home field.

The Comets hosted Minot State University in a Dakota Athletic Conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 27. But the home field advantage was not enough for Mayville State as Minot State swept the doubleheader by scores of 3-1 and 8-5.

Game 1: Minot State 3 – Mayville State 1
Game one of the afternoon started out as a defensive battle. The game remained scoreless through the first five innings. Minot State finally broke open the scoring when they knocked in three runs in the top of the sixth.

Mayville State tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Angelique Macias got a hit to get on base for the Comets. Krista Hendricks would then get an RBI to drive home Macias.

But the rally would fall short as Minot State held on to take the game 3-1.

Game 2: Minot State 8 – Mayville State 5
The bats warmed up for both teams in the second competition of the day. After getting just three hits and one RBI in the first game, Mayville State compiled nine hits and five RBIs in the second. Minot State came up with 13 hits and seven RBIs.

Minot State got on the board first with a three run second inning. But the Comets answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning and two more in the third for a 3-3 tie. The teams would each get another run in the sixth.

Minot State would double up their score with a 4 run eighth inning to take an 8-4 lead. And once again the Comets were looking to make a rally in the bottom of the final inning.

Angelique Macias got the rally attempt underway when she came up with a single-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh. But that was all the runs that MSU would get in the final inning as Minot State won 8-5.

Valea Crowder saw plenty of time on the pitcher's mound for the Comets. Crowder pitched the complete first game and then came back to pitch 5.2 innings in the second contest.

The loses drop Mayville State to 11-23 overall and 7-9 in conference.

The Comets return to action this Friday and Saturday as they host Dickinson State University in a four game series. Game times are set for 1p.m. and 3p.m. each day.
