Softball swept by Dickinson State

The Mayville State University softball team continued a six game home stand today when they hosted Dickinson State University in a Dakota Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Not only did the Comets have to battle the Blue Hawks, they had to battle a strong North Dakota wind. The city of Mayville recorded wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour throughout the afternoon.

But the wind didn't seem to affect the Dickinson State offense, as they went on to sweep Mayville State by scores of 14-5 and 20-3.

Game 1: Dickinson State 14 – Mayville State 5
Dickinson State got on the board early with a two run first inning. And it was just the beginning of the Blue Hawks' offensive output. DSU would rack up 11 hits and 14 RBIs in game one of the series.

MSU got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second. DSU would answer right back with two runs in the third. But the Comets used three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie it up 4-4.

Dickinson State took a three run lead back in the fifth before Mayville State scored once more in the sixth. But the Blue Hawks put the game away when they exploded for a seven run seventh inning to take the game 14-5.

Mayville State came up with 10 hits and five RBIs in the effort.

Game 2: Dickinson State 20 – Mayville State 3
Dickinson State's hot offense in game one carried right over into game two. The Blue Hawks posted a second consecutive seven run inning to start off the game.

Mayville State would stay in the game by scoring two runs in the second and another in the third. But that was all the offense MSU would be able to come up with.

Dickinson State would go on to make a statement in the game by scoring five runs in the third, six in the fourth and two more in the final inning.

The losses move Mayville State to 11-25 overall and 7-11 in conference play.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon to finish the four game series.
