The Mayville State University Comets will be continuing their season on Thursday, May 14 after beating #3 seed William Woods University in an elimination game at the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round in Bellevue, NE.
The Comets got off to a fast start by putting four runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning.
Zach Mihic started the game for the Comets with a double to right-center field.
Brandon Weber took Mihic's place at second base and then advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt by
Spencer Mallonee.
John Pistulka brought Weber home safely with a base hit for the first run of the game. The next three runs came courtesy of a three run homer from
Nate Williams which gave the Comets a 4-0 lead.
The Comets added another run in the bottom of the third inning.
Spencer Mallonee reached base with a single and then stole second.
Aaron Miller singled up the middle which brought Mallonee home for the fifth run of the ballgame, giving the Comets a 5-0 lead.
The Owls of William Woods University would make a run at the Comets with two runs in the top of the fifth inning and another in the top of the seventh, but the Comets never relinquished control and won by a final score of 6-3.
John Pistulka pitched four innings for the Comets giving up six hits and two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts.
Garrett Osterode finished the job by pitching five innings giving up three hits and one run with five strikeouts.
The Comets move on to take on #1 seed Tabor College on Thursday, May 14 at 1:30pm in Bellevue, NE. The Comets lost to the Blue jays in their second game of the opening round by a score of 8-0. After beating Mayville, Tabor lost to Bellevue. Thursday's game against the Blue jays is an elimination game. The winner of Mayville vs. Tabor will move on to play the host team Bellevue University on Thursday, May 14 at 5pm.
