OMAHA, NE - Mayville State easily did away with the Dickinson State Blue Hawks 14-5 on Thursday in their first game of the day in Omaha, NE.
In the first inning, the Comets got their offense started when an error scored
Riley Nelson to take an early 1-0 lead. MSU tacked on three more runs in the innings when
Zachary Foster drove in
Jonathan Pluth on a base hit, then
Brady Nygaard put a 2-run home run over the left field fence to give the Comets an early 4-0 lead.
Mayville State then scored seven runs in the fifth inning to break things wide open. A double by
Jonathon Folena with the bases loaded put things at 14-3 to stretch the gap and all but put the Blue Hawks away.
Osvaldo Escobar pitched Mayville State to victory. He surrendered three runs on six hits over four innings, striking out five and walking one.
Conner Starke threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Ryan Absher took the loss for Dickinson State. He lasted four and a third innings, allowing five hits and nine runs while striking out two.
Zachary Foster led the Comets with three hits in four at bats, scoring three runs and driving in another.
Dickinson State racked up ten hits in the game. Will Quito and Gabe Lizarraga both managed multiple hits for DSU. Quito went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Blue Hawks at the plate.
In game two,
Zachary Foster's bat delivered again, this time in the form of a clutch game-winning base hit in the bottom of the seventh to give the Comets a 4-3 win in a huge conference matchup with Bellevue.
Mayville State found themselves down 3-2 and on their last three outs when
Riley Nelson started things with a lead-off single, then was later able advance to second on a wild pitch.
Andrew Hill then delivered a big single to left to advance Nelson to third. In the next at-bat,
Jonathan Pluth was able to drive a ball deep enough to the outfield to bring in Nelson on a tag up to tie the game. Then, Foster's single to left brought in
Andrew Hill from second base for the game-winner.
Bellevue got on the board first in the third inning when JT Patterson brought in Matt Evans on a fielder's choice. The Comets responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning off RBIs from
Andrew Hill and
Jonathan Pluth.
The Bruins took the lead in the fifth on two unearned runs. A Comet error, a fielder's choice, and a base-hit by Gary Dixon ended up giving Bellevue a 3-2 lead to set up the final innings.
Mason Swegarden earned his sixth win on the season after going seven innings, giving up six hits and one earned run while striking out five.

Zachary Foster,
Brady Nygaard, and
Mason Pryzbilla each collected two hits to lead the Comets at the plate in game two.
Riley Baasch led the way for the Bruins by going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The two conference wins today bring Mayville State's record to 11-1 in the NSAA, and 21-8 overall. They'll square off in a weekend series against Jamestown next weekend.
