DICKINSON, ND - Mayville State watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 15-5 loss to the University of Jamestown in game one on Monday. The Jimmies scored on a single by Quinn Irey, a grand slam by Scooter Turin, and a base hit by Kory Wolden in the first inning.
The Comets struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Jamestown, giving up 15 runs.
After the Comets scored a run in the top of the sixth to try to mount a comeback, the Jimmies answered with one of their own. Mayville State scored when Jamestown's pitcher,
Eli Fultz threw a wild pitch allowing
Brady Nygaard to score. Jamestown then answered when Oz Escobar threw a wild pitch allowing a run across the plate to put their lead back to ten in the bottom of the sixth.
Joe Spradlin led Jamestown to victory on the pitcher's mound. He went five innings, allowing four runs on six hits, striking out one and walking one. Eli Fultz threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Craig Broadman took the loss for Mayville State. He lasted four and two-thirds innings, allowing nine hits and 13 runs.
Despite the loss, the Comets tallied three home runs on the day.
Andrew Hill went deep in the first inning,
Obie Wilder went for the long ball in the fourth inning, and
Zachary Foster went yard in the third.
The Jimmies collected 13 hits. Jaden Yackley, Scooter Turin, Kory Wolden, and Quinn Irey all collected multiple hits for Jamestown. Yackley went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead his team in hits in game one of the double-header.
It was the
Andrew Hill and
Austin Monson show in game two as the two sluggers combined for four home runs and all nine of the Comet RBIs to lead Mayville State to a 9-4 win over the North Star opponent.
The Comets were down 4-3 in the top of the seventh inning when
Andrew Hill hit a 2-run home run on a 0-2 count to give Mayville State the lead. Then later in the inning,
Austin Monson provided the insurance runs with a grand slam and his second home run of the game, bringing in
Jonathan Pluth,
Brady Nygaard, and
Obie Wilder to make it 9-4.
Mayville State opened up scoring in the second inning when Monson hit a solo shot on an 0-2 count. After the Comets scored two runs in the top of the third, Jamestown answered with two of their own when Kaleb Binstock singled to center field and scored Kory Wolden, then Binstock was able to score on a fielder's choice later in the inning to make it 3-2.
The Jimmies then took the lead in the fifth with a run from Jaden Yackley and another from Binstock to make things 4-3. Both teams went quiet at the plate until
Andrew Hill and
Austin Monson went to work in the seventh with their 6-run explosion off of the two home runs.
Kalton Agnes took the win for Mayville State. He surrendered four runs on six hits over five and a third innings, striking out four and walking one.
Tanner Roundy ended up with the loss for Jamestown after giving up three runs on two hits, walking one.
The Comets racked up nine hits in the game.
Austin Monson, Jonathon Pluth, and
Andrew Hill all managed multiple hits for Mayville State.
Jamestown collected eight hits in the game. Zach Zurbrugg and Kaleb Binstock both had two hits to lead the way at the plate for the Jimmies.
The series split moves Mayville State overall record to 24-10 and a 13-3 mark in the North Star. The Jimmies move to 10-6 in the NSAA and 33-7 on the season.
