JAMESTOWN, N.D. - The Comets lost the lead late in a 5-3 defeat to Presentation College on Sunday afternoon. The game was tied at three with the Saints batting in the top of the eleventh when Cameron Guevara singled on a 1-1 count, scoring Eric Hernandez to make give the Saints a lead, then an RBI from Johnny Radomskiy scored Blake Crain later in the inning to give Presenationa 2-run lead. The Comets couldn't respond with runs in the bottom half of the inning, and failed to advance in the semifinal round of the North Start Conference Tournament.
Mayville State got the offense started in the first inning.
Jonathon Folena singled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs and giving the Comets an early lead. MSU would add another run in the sixth inning when
Austin Monson doubled to bring in
Obie Wilder to make it 3-0.Â
But, the Saints would chip away at the Mayville State lead and keep themselves in it with two runs in the eighth inning, then tie things in the top of the ninth after a Zane Hunt solo homer for Presentation to make it 3-3.Â
KC Proctor took the win for the Saints. He went two innings, allowing one hit and no runs while walking one. Chris D'Amigo and Jesse Spangler entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Spangler recorded the last two outs to earn the save for Presentation
Max Christoff started the game for the Saints. He allowed five hits and three runs over five and a third innings, striking out five.
Erik Barron started the game for Mayville State, he surrendered three runs on seven hits over nine innings, striking out 11 and walking one.
Mayville State racked up eight hits on the day.
Jonathon Folena,
Austin Monson, and
Riley Nelson all managed multiple hits for the Comets. Folena went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Mayville State in hits.Â
Presentation College tallied 12 hits. Radomskiy, Crain, Guzman, and Hunt all had multiple hits for the Saints.
The loss ends Mayville State's season for now. Coach Berry's team will have to wait for the word on their postseason fate when the NAIA National Tournament field is announced next week. The Comets hold an overall record of 31-13 and sit at 19-4 in North Star matchups.Â
