Comet Baseball Can't Quiet Jimmies Bats

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Jamestown, N.D. - The Comets Baseball team headed down to Jamestown for a doubleheader with the Jimmies. Unfortunately, the Jimmies bats were on fire and the Comets dropped both games 15-6 and 12-2.

After the double header head coach Billy Tomblin said, "Jamestown is a good baseball team and we didn't show up ready to go. The result of today shows what happens when we don't show up." He also added, "I need to be better. I need to prepare these guys to play better. This is not our brand of baseball and it will change."

Game 1
In game one, no one crossed home plate until the bottom of the third when Jamestown rattled off four runs on three hits. The floodgates opened in the bottom of the fourth when the Jimmies plated seven more men.

The Comets offense came alive in the top of the sixth when Michael Feralio singled in two runs. Zachary Evanochko followed that with a two run blast to bring in Feralio. Channing Lenoir walked, stole second then scored on a Ricky Marquez single to cut the deficit to 13-5.

Jamestown tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 15-5. Chris Shopbell homered in the seventh, but it was not enough as Jamestown took game one 15-6.

"Jamestown was very impressive at the plate, it seemed like every ball they hit was loud," said Tomblin. "It's a good learning experience for our pitchers though, good teams will get after us when we live in the middle of the plate."

Shopbell with 3 for 4 with the HR and two runs scored and Evanochko went 2 for 3 with two RBI and a HR to pace the Comet offense.

Game 2
In game two, Jimmies were the first to score after a two run triple in the bottom of the second and then a home run in the bottom of the third.

The Comets were able to plate a run after a lead off double by Chris Shopbell and a single by Michael Feralio made the score 3-1 in the top of the fourth.

Another tough fourth inning for Mayville State as the Jimmies plated six runs and added three more in the fifth to make the score 12-1.

The Comets would plate one more run in the top of the sixth but couldn't add any more and dropped game two 12-2.

Overall the Comets had 12 hits on the day but defense couldn't play it clean and had 8 errors overall. "Defensively we just flat our fell apart today. We picked the ball up really well against Valley but today looked like a completely different team. We have a few days to try and get this cleaned up before we play Dickinson on Saturday," said Tomblin.

"Going into the weekend we just need to get a fire burning under us. You will win a lot of games with toughness and discipline and today we didn't have either. We do not have a lot of time for change to happen but it's not an option for it to change, it has to happen and it will," stated Tomblin.

Coach Tomblin ended with, "I like our group, we are capable, we just all have to get committed to fixing it."

Mayville State will travel to Dickinson, N.D. to take on Dickinson State this Saturday. First pitch is set for 1pm (CT).
